Wow toei , yeah looking at some footage of Rolling Thunder arcade, everything about this is the literal blueprint of Code Name Viper haha. EasyHard : I think I'm the only fan here but I'm also admittedly just a fan of later Turrican, ie Super Turrican 1-2 on the SNES and Mega Turrican (technically Turrican 3 and kind of the finale). I've always wanted to play the original Amiga Turrican 2 at least. I would say that these three later Turrican games were a bit more Western/Japanese influenced, whereas the Amiga originals seem pretty different and purely European. Big nonlinear maze like levels and exploration, for better or worse. The NES game is one of those cool feats made entirely by one guy, even the music was different. But yeah, even the three I like are still pretty different in flavor. You might want to give a few of them a shot. The SNES Super Turrican OST is probably up there with some of the most nostalgic OST's of all time, for me personally. Takes me back.
And while I still haven't played it, I've listened to the Turrican II OST a bunch over the years. Probably one of the most epic intros ever haha. Hail Chris Hüelsbeck!

Jackal absolutely fits this theme.
Not sure about Vice: Project Doom, mostly because it's very platforming and whip heavy. More Ninja Gaiden than Contra for sure. But you do get those first-person and car shooter stages.

I still need to hit up Jackal, but looking into it I don't think it would really fit this theme. I don't think it does, because in Jackal you are driving a jeep around shooting stuff. Rather than being a dude or humanoid running around shooting stuff. Because of that, I think Jackal is more a shmup. GameFAQs agrees, they classify it; Action » Shooter » Shoot-'Em-Up » Top-Down. Whereas GameFAQs classifies Contra as Action » Platformer » 2D. That said, I'm not gatekeeping here! Play whatever you think fits the theme.

Jackal is very much a game in the mold of Commando or Mercs. In fact, GameFAQs classifies both of those games the same way it does Jackal. Now, if one wants to not include top-down shooters of that ilk from the "run-and-gun" theme, that's just fine. But there's definitely a lot of running (or rolling) and gunning here. (And I love the game. A lot. So I want folks that have never played it to do so!) (Also, the NES version, much like Contra, is far superior to the arcade game.)

Now, if one wants to not include top-down shooters of that ilk from the "run-and-gun" theme, that's just fine. My qualm isn't the camera view. My qualm is that the player drives a jeep around in Jackal, rather than runs around on foot. For me personally, the "run" part of Run 'n' Gun means bipedal movement. That said, I do understand where you are coming from. The basic gameplay in Jackal feels more like an overhead run 'n' gun, instead of an overhead shmup. Well I'll beat Jackal if you'll beat Ace Combat 5.

That's where it gets tricky, cause looking at vids of Jackal, it seems impossible to argue that it's not in the same genre as Commando. If it's not, it's purely on account of one single sprite, rather than any gameplay element. But isn't this kind of a made up Internet genre anyway? In general the standard seems to be Contra, but a bunch of games people will include don't play like Contra at all.

But isn't this kind of a made up Internet genre anyway? I'm not sure if it is, or isn't. The genre term may have appeared in old gaming magazines or advertisements, but I don't care to do that level of research right now. Lots of gaming genres we refer to often, originated on the internet anyway, so I don't see why that matters. I agree. When I think of the name "run 'n' gun" the first game that pops in my mind is Contra, followed by Metal Slug. A dude running across a stage, constantly gunning down everything in sight, with barely a moment's break. About the Jackal question. I think I'm coming across as more pedantic than I intend to be. I agree that game's gameplay is basically " Commando in a jeep". And I consider Commando a run 'n' gun for sure. I was only trying to explain that for me the "run" part means on foot, not on tires or jet engines. But if anyone considers Jackal to be a "run 'n' gun", I wouldn't argue they're all wrong. It's simply a matter of perspective. Anyway, I'm hoping tomorrow I'll have time to take down a run 'n' gun or two. I'll likely focus on arcade entries for this theme, though I may bust out a console or handheld release eventually.

All good. I appreciate the discussion, and understand where you're coming from. Contra is definitely the first thing that pops into my mind as well.

Can I make an honest admission here? I don't actually care much for Journey to Silius. It's pretty good, but I always hear it talked about in hushed tones in some quarters, and I just don't see what warrants the effusive praise.
Other than the soundtrack, of course. Splendid stuff.
