I keep wanting to stumble on a cart of this - it's definitely on my list. I hear that the ports are pretty good, too, but I'd certainly love the N64 original. I do feel like it got ignored by a ton of people (including myself!) who just assumed it was a port to the N64 instead of its own thing.
Some RPGs definitely help you to zone out. When I'm a bit tired, I tend to go for games that are either easy, very forgiving of deaths, or play in places that let me credit-feed/save state-spam my way through.

I do feel like it got ignored by a ton of people (including myself!) who just assumed it was a port to the N64 instead of its own thing. While I loved playing Doom64 with friends at night, it seemed like after II there wasn't need for more--especially with all the free WADs available.
Side Note: my 2 year old would hop in my lap and grab the Zapper and "help" me shoot those demons. It was at night, so he got about 30 minutes of shooting demons before bed. Hopefully I won't regret that decision

Heh, hopefully he's young enough to not be too impacted by it. I still remember the Raiders of the Lost Ark scene at the end scaring the crap out of me when I was younger (but not that young).

Piggybacking on the recent discussion, I learned Wave Race 64 is a fine game to play when tired. The fact that you don't have to really do anything to move forward in a racer makes it require a lot less effort somehow.
I've been spending a little time revisiting a few more N64 racers: F-Zero X (two cups), Extreme G (one race), and just now Mario Kart 64 (one cup). Extreme G isn't as fast as the tone suggests and it doesn't present a great play feel out of the box, so I didn't give it much of a shake. I don't think I played it more than a couple days (as a rental) back in the N64 era either. F-Zero X was fun, but I'd forgotten how easy it is to make direct mental comparisons to F-Zero GX. That seems to ding my desire to memorize lots of these narrow turns when it feels like I'd still be thrown around walls more than I would be in GX.
Wave Race 64 is my favorite racer on the system. I highly recommended it if you want either a racing game or a very upbeat game for this month. I manned up and managed to beat Expert Course using A. Stewart (the worst top speed character), and even understand those hellish wooden poles in Drake Lake. When I went back to my boy Jeter, the turning felt *so* sensitive again. Playing with a less sensitive character really changes the experience, because you start to anticipate turns more. The finite time it takes for your character to shift to the opposite side of the jet ski matters, and it is a very conscious strategy to start executing this first part of the turning animation well in advance.
When returning to Jeter I also noticed he had really good acceleration, which made me wonder if the acceleration/top speed slider is less useful than it seems. Like, you'd rather have Jeter's higher top speed than Stewart's higher acceleration, but maxing out the top speed slider (even for Stewart) might be a worse tradeoff than leaving it close to the middle.

Let's just say the method for playing the game originally was less than ideal. Ah a Boktai game then. Overall if you are looking for classic doom, Doom64 delivers in spades. I'm definitely gonna have to play this one. I've seen it praised on HRG quite a few times. I had no idea back in the late '90s this was its own thing. I thought it was just a straight port of the original DOOM to N64. The publisher could have done a better job making it clear this was a unique game. Some RPGs definitely help you to zone out. True enough, but definitely not Digital Devil Saga. That JRPG will destroy you quickly if you're not paying attention 100%. It's definitely NOT relaxing. Side Note: my 2 year old would hop in my lap and grab the Zapper and "help" me shoot those demons. It was at night, so he got about 30 minutes of shooting demons before bed. My daughter sat in my lap and watched me play through most of Half-Life, when she was 3. At 22 she seems okay. Certainly not afraid of marines or aliens anyway. The fact that you don't have to really do anything to move forward in a racer makes it require a lot less effort somehow. In general I think I'd agree. Except for this one: Are you a fan of jet ski racing games in general?

Yep, you got it. Figured that would be too easy a hint! I'm definitely enjoying it, though, but I'm using a sunlight sensor patch so I can adjust it on the fly.

Made it all the way to the final boss, Dracula, in Castlevania: The Adventure ReBirth tonight. Thought I had him beat, but the bastard had a THIRD form. Still got his final form's life bar half depleted before I finally died. That was enough for me tonight. Hopefully I'll finish him off tomorrow.

Are you a fan of jet ski racing games in general? The only jet ski games that I've played are the two Wave Race games. I haven't played a lot of racers in general either, especially as the console generations have advanced. It might have to be with becoming more selective, or just not being exposed to enough people who are interested in them.

Ex: Yeah, I remember that fight being kinda ridiculous. I was like, "Ha, got him! Wait, another form?"

8.5/10 Overall if you are looking for classic doom, Doom64 delivers in spades. The upgraded environment, additional weapon, and improved levels polish up the classic Doom experience. Nice beat! Nothing but love for that game here so far. It's a shame the N64 didn't get more FPS's in this style. I wouldn't want to change anything about how much multiplayer fun I had with Goldeneye or Perfect Dark back in the day, but those and the Turok's are a little chunky to go back to. Unless you go for the ports (Turok on various platforms and Perfect Dark got a nice remaster on XBLA). But well I'm probably the biggest OG Doom fan here in general, I just love it to death mechanically. I could have played 10 more Doom 64 sequels for sure.
I guess it's worth pointing out, the new official PC release does have a brand new episode and I was pretty impressed with it. The difficulty was pretty up there too. I think I like Doom II's modern "No Rest for the Living" Episode more, but it's awesome to get brand new maps with some of these old games when they get ported/remastered.
