Got EarthBound at launch. Played the hell out of it. Beat it several times. When the dust settled a not-so-great "friend" (more of an acquaintance, really) asked me if he could borrow it for a couple of weeks. I said sure, showed up to school the next day and handed him the game. All packed and complete, in the big box with the strategy guide.
You know how this ends.

I'm guessing you weren't friends anymore after that.

I've heard so many horror stories like that haha. I really can't recall it ever happening to me. I think even as a kid I was very meticulous about my stuff and hated sharing... so I never really opted to let people borrow my stuff. I know I did here and there but I never forgot about it and kept tabs on them. I hated getting my games or controllers mixed up when people had parties. I often traded silly things for games though. I remember trading some random Pokemon cards I had for some N64 games. I traded some crappy skateboard to someone for a still-mint black label copy of FF7 that I have to this day haha. I guess my friends didn't care about some of those crazy deals but I think I jipped some of them.

I had a copy of Zelda II I lent to a classmate. Thankfully, I got the game back, but I'd lent it with the box and manual, too. Sucked to lose those. I also remember lending my Sonic CD (PC) disc to some friends, and I got it back so scuffed that I wondered if a dog had gotten a hold of it.

I never had anyone steal my games, but there were some kids at my elementary school who insisted they knew cheat codes for Faceball 2000 on Gameboy. I can remember this booger-eater telling me, "Just press down, over, down, left, down, over, right, down, over, over..." in some endless combination. I meticulously wrote down what he told me and of course it never worked. He was just making up button combinations as he went.

Booger-eaters are terrible people one should never trust. As a demographic they did get catered to once though:

I had one game stolen from my desk at school, it was Final Fantasy Legend II. Never found out who took it and never did beat it because of that. I was so close too, I was stuck at the fight with Odin.

How did I miss this post! What a whacky weird game. I'm going to add Sonic Adventure 2 for the GC to this list. When Gamestops were selling out of their backstock of Gamecube games (and they were all discounted) I purchased a copy of Sonic Adventure 2. By the time I got around to testing it, seeing that it didn't work, and returning it, there were no copies left. I'm not devastated or anything, but I thought it was an unusual way to have a game slip from your collection.
