although I'd say that on the 2600 even it is way better than a bunch of the early Famicom games even I do not doubt it. Last year I beat Dragonstomper for the 2600, and was blown away by how complex and involved it was for being a 2600 release. So if you know of any other 2600 games that have appreciable complexity - and are fun - I'm listening.
Bone's probably the better person to check with on that (which he actually covered well; does he even still stop by here?). I enjoy a tight action game, typically shooters. I ended up getting rid of a lot of the adventure games I had on those systems as they don't really do it for me. Tutankham, Montezuma's Revenge, Jungle Hunt, and the Pitfall series of course I'd add alongside HERO as having a more adventure-like feel, though Dragonstomper is a proper RPG. You might also like Venture. I'd get all those on the Coleco except the Pitfall series which I think are actually better on Atari (or there must have been some reason I chose the Atari versions).
Maybe check out Space Raiders, which I had a harder time getting into but you might enjoy. Note that you need to buy special peripherals for it. I have no idea how emulation would work in that regard.

does he even still stop by here? Well based on his last login... ...I'm gonna guess he doesn't. Hardcore Retro Gaming is perhaps too hardcore for most folks to stay long. Gotta be a real G to stick with HRG. I've played all of those except for Tutankham. I'll look into that one.
Venture is a good recommendation, and I also beat that one last year. It was via the Coleco version as well. I tried all its variants, and I'd say the ColecoVision port was the best, although the 2600 version had the best cover art.
I've never heard of that one, I'll check it out. Thanks for the recommendations.
Edit: Actually I have played Star Raiders! A friend of mine had it when I was in middle school. We never made it very far into the game back then (didn't bother to read the manual). Reading up on Star Raiders, it's an impressive space sim given its time of release (1979). I do think it'd lose something in translation without having its " Video Touch Pad" peripheral to use.

Yep, you have to have that and the overlay that came with it, too. I'll think about more deep cuts as well.

I could recommend a few dozen of these games, but one I love to preach about is HERO. In my opinion, this is Activision at its very best of the era, better than Pitfall or River Raid. I was aware of HERO before you mentioned it, but I'd never played it. I watched the video you posted, and the 2600 version is really impressive given its hardware. The game is leaning towards an 8-bit design. It looks pretty fun. Whenever we do another theme that this game could fall into, I'll give it a try.
By coincidence, Duke0619 posted about it on RFGen.
