I'm pretty meh on NT. My brother and I got the GC game when it came out, and were very disappointed. You can try it, but I suspect you won't much care for it. EDIT: Ack, you changed your post on me! Battle Network is worth trying for sure. Just not six games worth of it. shows how little attention I've paid to these Mega Man spinoffs, can't keep the titles straight haha. Yeah, I meant the big GBA/handheld turn based series, Battle Network. HLTB says the first one is probably only about a dozen hours, so that's not too bad.
I double checked my "to play" physical shelf and I'm seeing any other offshoots or whatnot.
But yeah open to other ideas.

I still need to finish up Command Mission one day. Maybe that's a good target for my next game.

Man, you guys were talking JRPG hallways... it doesn't get more literal than X Command Mission. Seems like a very competent and cool game otherwise, but the level design and setting put me in a coma! Hah.
And while the level layouts and all seemed uninspired, the production is still pretty impressive. Which just made me extra jealous we didn't get a PS2 Legends game.

I think it just kinda happens for me. It's not a "I'm done with this game forever" moment so much as a "I'd much rather be playing x game instead". It's rare that I quit a JRPG just right then and there. It's more like I continuously lack the feeling of impetus to want to play it again later. I've also got Front Mission 4 I'm definitely looking forward to the day you play FM4 and FM5. Don't forget about FM5! But yeah, those aren't spinoffs. Well, there is one FM spinoff you can play... and I've already beaten it, but I'll save my opinion for myself: Released for PS3, 360, and PC. Sooo... Mega Man Battle Network. Is it finally time I try this subseries out? Pretty meh stuff. I liked this one okay though. I've been playing a MM spinoff today myself, might even have it beat tonight.

I've been playing a MM spinoff today myself, might even have it beat tonight. And it's done... Mega Man: Battle & Chase is a PS1 kart racer, developed by Capcom, and published by Capcom in Japan in 1997. Infogrames published this game in Europe in 1998. A USA release was planned but canceled, because SCEA wouldn't allow its publishing, due to an already large presence of mascot-themed racing games in the video game market. Being a spinoff of the Mega Man franchise, Battle & Chase uses a Mega Man world motif. Unlike Mario Kart, Battle & Chase focuses on winning individual courses instead of course cups. There is also a heavy combat aspect as well, along with kart customization. The player must win first place in every course to beat the game.
In the single player mode, the player chooses a racer (such as Mega Man, Roll, Proto Man, Bass, Duo, as well as a few of Wily's Robot Masters), and then faces off against individual opponents. The player races an opponent (and a few other AI racers) on that opponent's unique course. There are 9 total opponent courses, and 1 final track against Dr. Wily. If the player beats their opponent, the player can choose to take one of their opponent's kart components (engine, wheels, wing) which the player can then combine onto their own kart. Every component (and there are MANY) has its own unique advantage and disadvantage. Each racer has a unique default attack, and random weapon pick-ups are available as well. Tracks are littered with obstacles (such as cones and Mets), which the player is encouraged to drive into and destroy. Every time the player destroys ten obstacles, they are awarded a random pick-up.
+Despite being "another kart racer", this one is fairly unique. +Captures its source theme well aesthetically. +Strategizing kart configurations pays off. +The OST is rather good. +No rubber-band AI!
-Nowhere near as polished as any Mario Kart.
-Doesn't run as smoothly as it should (granted I was playing the 50Hz PAL version).
-Frequent LOADING screens.
-Not much replayability outside "collect all the parts".
-Some of the course designs are really rough and sadistic.
When interviewed about Battle & Chase, series producer Keiji Inafune said he'd always been interested in a kart racer where you could absorb rivals' abilities, just as you can in the Mega Man games proper. So it was likely gratifying for him to see this game come to fruition. Unfortunately, Capcom was cut off at the knees by SCEA, so this game's chance to shine in the west never happened. I enjoyed this one enough to wonder what a PS2 sequel could have brought, but alas late '90s pompous SCEA. (On a side note; As much as Battle & Chase was compared to Mario Kart, it reminded strongly of Ray Tracers as well.) Beyond the single player mode, there's a split-screen versus, and a time attack mode too, but that stuff doesn't add much more longevity. Ultimately Battle & Chase would have been a fine rental for a Mega Man fan in its day. As a complete genre-change spinoff for Mega Man it's a minor victory lap.

That's actually one of the first games I downloaded back in the day. Still got it burned in a folder. Too bad it didn't come out here - I'm sure it would have been fine.
As for Crash Team Racing, by all accounts it is a fantastic kart racer. I haven't put a lot of time into it, though.

Translation: nah, we got a Crash Bandicoot kart racer coming up. Quite possibly the real reason. As for Crash Team Racing, by all accounts it is a fantastic kart racer. I agree, the original CTR on PS1 is legit good. Unfortunately, Crash Nitro Kart and Crash Tag Team Racing aren't nearly as good. I don't know about Crash Team Racing: Nitro-Fueled though.

I know there's weird stuff like Mega Man fighting games... but I think this is seriously the first time I've ever heard of this kart racer.
