Yeah, as far as the game structure itself, it's fairly straightforward if you've played any Dragon Quest. But checking a mechanics guide? Yeah, I absolutely recommend doing that, just so you know what's going down behind the scenes, because the game is pretty opaque about a lot of things, especially when it comes to snagging runes, fighting apprentices, and leveling/apprentice levels and recruitment.

when it comes to snagging runes, fighting apprentices, and leveling/apprentice levels and recruitment I consider figuring that stuff out yourself to be part of the game challenge. It's half the battle. It is BS that you can pick a protagonist that makes the game practically unwinnable, though. I'd certainly be interested in seeing Xeogred's take on this one.

I don't know that it actually makes it unwinnable, just harder. Perhaps for solo runs, but as long as you're choosing your partners well, it's not so bad. But to be honest, you're almost always going to end up with either Esuna or Valsu on your team, no matter what. Unless you plan on just chugging potions left and right, of course. Sure, Olvan and Kamil have some healing, but honestly it's not really enough to truly keep up.
I mentioned it before, but this game really does give me heavy Dragon Quest vibes. Not from an overall feel, because it isn't nearly as light-hearted as Dragon Quest, but from a structural standpoint it shares a lot of DNA.
On paper, the spiritual sequel Mystic Ark seems like it would be the better game, but I found stretches of it pretty boring. Now, sure, The 7th Saga can be boring, too, when you're having to grind, but the constant challenge absolutely keeps you on your toes, and that rush of elation when you manage to get to the next town alive is something else.

I don't know that it actually makes it unwinnable, just harder. Try doing a solo Lejes run and get back to me on that. I wonder if I could play as Lux and get Esuna to join? That sounds like a great team. that rush of elation when you manage to get to the next town alive is something else It all makes me wonder if maybe the 7th Saga is the better game after all, if Elnard is a cakewalk. I mean, The 7th Saga is such a dark looking game, it makes sense it should be a ball buster. To use a horribly dated comparison; "The Dark Souls of SNES JRPGs."

Yeah, I really feel like it might lose a lot of what makes it special. I think they may have unintentionally made it better.
