I don't think I'll be able to come up with a top 25, but I'll try: Decent Freespace (I'm lumping both I and II here.) Half-life Baldur's Gate I Quest for Glory
Nocturne Ultima VIII Planscape Torment
Starcraft Kings Quest VI Command And Conquer Red alert Tribes Thief: Dark Project Majesty
Diablo I 7 kingdoms
Doom II Sim City 2000 7th Guest
Heroes of Might and Magic III Quake II Dark Sun: Shattered Lands Warcraft II: The narrator's voice is halarious
Total Annahilation
Return to Krondor Warlords III: Battlecry Legends for Valor
I miss PC Gamer. When I say that I mean the getting PC Gamer during the 90s. It just isn't the same now...
Edit some games that didn't make the list (Quest for Camelot (1989), Prince of Persia (1989), Dangerous Dave, Jill of the Jungle, Zork, Stronghold Firefly's (2001), Stronghold AD&D version isn't bad.)

Oh, yeah, I really liked that era of PC Gamer. I had a lot of their mags.
I'm sure a few games will be added to my list eventually, like Baldur's Gate or Planescape Torment. Just gotta devote time to it...
Have you tried out all the mods for Freespace 2? There's even one that moves all the missions from the first game into the Freespace 2 engine.

I regret never playing these. I remember at one time Freespace 2 was very expensive on the aftermarket. I ended up selling my unplayed copy for about $100 back in 2006.
>Baldur's Gate I
This one I have a regret with as well. I played through 90% of the game many years ago, completely exploring every bit of the world and maxing out my characters... until I reached the actual city of Baldur's Gate itself. I had saved it for last, but when I finally got there, I was burned out and quit playing the game. By that time I had about 30 hours invested. I really wish I'd just pushed through and finished this one. I also got about halfway through Icewind Dale and ended up quitting that one as well. Same thing with Planescape Torment. I don't know what it is with me and Infinity Engine games.
>Kings Quest VI
It seems we all agree this is the best series entry. KQ5 comes close for me, but it's got a few quirks that hold it back compared to KQ6.
>Dark Sun: Shattered Lands
Did you actually finish this one?

I've *never* beaten a King's Quest game (or gotten close), but I did play a number of them quite a bit in the 90s. King's Quest 5 I was able to suss out the most, I still remember using ants to find a needle in a haystack and luring a bear with honey (or something like that). I also remember the first area of King's Quest 7 where you play as that old lady in the desert. This was the jump to CD, so everything was much s.l.o.w.e.r, but I recall appreciating the puzzle design a lot more in KQ7, and being proud of being able to solve it without having to like, come back years later. King's Quest 6 is also nice, although even when I revisited it after the 2000s I bailed. Changing times bring changing perspectives: Back in the day, I felt like I appreciated King's Quest just fine. Eventually though I went online and encountered people who loved the series (and genre) a lot more than I did. Also: completing a game you like has become such a bigger part of one's overall attitude towards a game in discussions... that is whether you decide to "elevate" your appreciation for it amongst all the games you enjoy. I guess I just feel a bit sheepish about these kinds of games when discussing them nowadays.
(Edit: typos/mixed up KQ5 and KQ6)

I had saved it for last, but when I finally got there, I was burned out and quit playing the game. By that time I had about 30 hours invested. I really wish I'd just pushed through and finished this one. I also got about halfway through Icewind Dale and ended up quitting that one as well. Same thing with Planescape Torment. I don't know what it is with me and Infinity Engine games. I think Icewind Dale is not a good game. The plot quickly became bland and if you didn't select the right character classes then you would either have to level up or cheat the system somehow. I see what they were trying to do with the create your own fully custom party, but that feature detached your characters from the story. BG, on the other hand, the characters would have their own interactions with the events unfolding (as well as inter character events.) That and I think the story was just better. If you do get a lot of time on your hands, BG II is really good as well (but do beat the first one first of course.) Unfortunately, you are probably looking at close to 100 hours for BG I + BG II, especially if you get the expansions, and the BGII expansion is really good. I fully understand not finishing BG. The game is way too long and the city part isn't as interesting as romping through the Sword Coast. Planescape Torment is definitely a unique game in how you build your character. I wish they made another. KQ5 is a close second, but KG6 had better puns. ; ) Multiple times and at varying difficulties. If you are having issues with the final battle, either save the Genie or abuse Mass Dominate (which requires a Psionicist in your party.) It is hard for me to rank the Dark Sun (DS) games. I greatly prefer the battle system over BG's, because it is turn-based tactical RPG. On the other hand, BG's engine definitely outclasses DS by a lot. Now, DS' length is better (ie: shorter but still fulfilling), but you need to appreciate the post-apocalyptic gladiator escapes to save the world plot (which has become a little cliche today.) The series does have an interesting history as Dark Sun Online: Crimson Sands (DSO) was one of the first MMORPGs. You can read the post-mortem.DS is the reason for my recent lapse in gaming. I've be off and on with reverse engineering the DS1 (Shattered Lands) game engine. All of a sudden I got through and have all the media (graphics, music, audio), map data, monster data, and I was able to reverse engineer most of the GPL (their scripting language) to Lua. The point of the work is that it is both fun and to resurrect the DSO server which appears appears to be lost (since it was part of TEN.NET). In case it isn't obvious, this takes way too much time.

I guess it's in the spirit of the thread not to list Turok 1 & 2, even though they had great PC ports.
1. Star Wars: Dark Forces 2. Doom 2 3. Doom 4. Quake 5. Duke Nukem 3D 6. Hexen 7. Shadow Warrior 8. Syndicate 9. Starcraft 10. Heroes of Might & Magic 3 11. Heroes of Might & Magic 2 12. SimCity 2000 13. Blood 14. Star Wars: Jedi Knight 15. Civilization 2 (the expansions are great too) 16. Command & Conquer: Red Alert 17. Command & Conquer 18. Myst 19. Lemmings 20. Theme Park 21. Castles 2 22. Half-Life 23. Marathon 2: Durandal (technically Mac exclusive) 24. Marathon (technically Mac Exclusive) 25. Warcraft 2 The Quest For Glory games also are part of my 90s PC nostalgia, but I no longer really remember the specifics about them. ( Heroine's Quest: The Herald of Ragnarok is a free modern successor that I recommend, one of several new QFG-likes I gather.)

Heroes of Might & Magic is another series that looks interesting from a glance. Think I got a few of them in some GOG bundle once...
Has anyone messed with the newer Starcraft remaster? I'm probably more interested in that than I would be the upcoming Diablo 2 remaster.

I'd totally list Turok 1/2 if you feel they're worthy. I mean, I put NBA Jam TE on my list.
Probably opens the floodgates for other ports of that nature, too. PC got a port of Mega Man X that's almost as good as the SNES game (the music isn't as good). The port of Super Street Fighter II is really good, unlike prior SF2 ports.

Xeogred Heroes of Might & Magic can be incredibly addicting. It has got a lot of the appeal of RTSes (very distinctive factions, lots of unit types with their own statistics and special traits, conquering a map and amassing all the resources) as well as RPGs (leveling up your heroes, learning magic and advancing a skill tree). Pretty good Strategy/Tactics game as well, actually.

I think Icewind Dale is not a good game. It's been a long time, but I remember thinking the game was VERY dungeon crawling and combat oriented. More like Diablo than Baldur's Gate. Definitely a different design ethos. I can beat really long RPGs like that, but it takes me quite a while. I average between 1-2 hours of gaming per night, so a 100 hour long RPG takes me a while. It's not an effort if the RPG can remain consistently interesting, like New Vegas did for me. But I'm not able to binge a game 4-8 hours a day like a lot of people seem to do who finish long games in rapid succession. I just don't have that in me anymore, I prefer to spread my time out over multiple hobbies nowadays. >Planescape Torment is definitely a unique game in how you build your character. I just wish so much of it wasn't stuck being in Sigil. I wanted to plane-hop a lot, but that didn't happen. >KQ5 is a close second, but KG6 had better puns. Have you ever played through KQ2? That one is chock full of jokes. Even Batman makes an appearance (not kidding!). >It is hard for me to rank the Dark Sun (DS) games I got confused. I was thinking of this game: www.gog.com/game/darklandsI spent some time with it in the '90s, but I didn't play Shattered Lands. Impressive effort, and more power to you man. I'm sure there's other grognards who'd appreciate the possibility. The Quest For Glory games also are part of my 90s PC nostalgia, but I no longer really remember the specifics about them. I have played QFG1-5, but the only one I finished was QFG2. I would like to someday play through the rest of the series in totality. They are unique experiences, it was fun vicariously playing QFG1 via Sarge 's play not long ago. Possibly the most relevant: www.gog.com/game/herou_rogue_to_redemptionHeroes of Might & Magic is another series that looks interesting from a glance. You might also like the Age of Wonders and SpellForce series. I think all those games are on GOG now.
