I suspect Wizardry (at least the early ones) are a bit too hard for their own good. Extremely important in shaping the genre, but I suspect surpassed by more accessible games. I think the CRPG Addict does a good job chronicling his playthroughs, but of course he's not up to the more modern stuff. But later Wizardry games are probably solid (he has VII rated quite highly), and the Might & Magic series is also supposed to be excellent, although those can be a lot goofier in tone.
There's also games in the Dungeon Master school of thought, ones that have real-time combat. I played through one in that vein, Lands of Lore, and didn't much care for it because of the combat. But perhaps the progenitor is actually a lot better. There's also the Gold Box games, most of which are first-person affairs, but combat in many of them (like Pool of Radiance) is actually overhead-view.

what's the consensus on the best 90's dungeon crawlers? Sounds like you're talking about blobbers. I remember these particular series being big in the '90s PC scene: Eye of the BeholderMight and MagicIsharLands of LoreRavenloftRealms of Arkania

2000, buddy. I'd give it to you on a technicality, but Ex already listed games from 1990.

You can erase Diablo 2 from my list and I won't really care.

After playing a fair amount of D1 and D3, I concur.

Well, to be fair, Diablo 2 is still the fan favorite of the bunch. And I can definitely see the appeal - after all, games like Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance very much rely on the Diablo template as well.

I'm not sure it does it better than Diablo 2, but then again, I haven't put a ton of time into Diablo 2. It's probably better than Diablo 1, though, and I also can't speak to the third game, since I never played that one.
