Nice job paulofthewest. I believe you would have enjoyed the DS remake more, it addresses some of your complaints. But I can understand the allure of playing the original release. DQ4 was very ambitious for its time, and broke new ground for the JRPG genre.

Indeed, excellent job. I think even more highly of it, but even getting an 8.25 for an NES game is quite remarkable. I don't necessarily think they needed to break up the last chapter further (it's basically like playing DQIII at that point), but I can also see why it might be helpful. It's entirely possible you'd have liked the DS version even more, especially since you can take manual control and I think there are a few plot points that are clearer in that version.

Ya, that is what I get for playing the NES version.
On to Crystalis, which I can already see the problems. Lack of direction and the Engrish. Also, I just realized the game never told the play to hold B to charge the sword!

I will be interested to see how your replay of Crystalis turns out. That game's combat system is the primary reason I dropped it.
I still plan to finish Landstalker, but it won't be before this month is over. I'll just chip away at it here and there over the summer.

Definitely a "read the manual" moment. Once again, I definitely recommend not using the normal sword attacks. It may feel annoying to do at first, but adjusting to always using charge shots makes it a lot more palatable in my opinion. The translation certainly isn't the worst I've seen on NES, but it definitely lacks clarity in spots, too. It certainly falls short of the excellent work on the Dragon Warrior games.

Once again, I definitely recommend not using the normal sword attacks. Notice I said "primary reason", and not "only reason". But I'm not knocking this game into the dirt and saying it's crap. Crystalis is not crap. It's just considerably overrated for my tastes. Now there are certainly games that I laud, which others would consider overrated and suffering from inferior design. We've all got our personal tastes. I'm still glad you were able to get me to sink a few hours into Crystalis. Who knows, I might pick it up again someday and have a change of mind.

Oh, yeah, I understand why you had issues. Who knows, if I weren't as familiar with it as I already am, I might not give it as high a score in hindsight. I was probably also heavily assisted by it being a feature fairly often in Nintendo Power's Counselor's Corner.

Managed to get revenge on that boss in Valkyrie Profile. So I might be able to power through this one, just hit chapter 5 and disc 2, 15 hours...
Still pulling my hair out though. This was the last dungeon I did in chapter 4. The picture says it all.

I remember loving those 3D maps though, I found them really useful. Reminded me of Armored Core's internal maps.

I'm just gonna point you at Ex's avatar and tell you to GIT GUD. In all seriousness, sorry it's not really hitting for ya. I do actually remember that dungeon, 'cause that map looks awfully familiar, even all these years later.
