Beaten:
Kirby's Adventure Dragon Warrior IV (DS version) Valkyrie Profile (PSP port) Metal Gear Solid Sly 2 Ghost Trick Link's Awakening
Started 2 times, but life got in the way while I was playing:
Paper Mario
I have to think which game to pick from the list. I want to play all I have not beaten yet!

Oh man, if you haven't beaten either of Chrono Trigger or Symphony of the Night, I feel like those are the two I'd recommend. I waffle between those two for my favorite games of all time.
Of course, if you want something shorter, then Contra is an easy choice, even if you need to use the Konami code to finish it off.

I think I can already tell this is probably one of Motoi Sakuraba's best OST's too. VP's OST is probably my favorite part of the game, it's outstanding. Although there's plenty of other aspects to admire. I strongly recommend you also play Brandish: Dark Revenant on PSP for this month too. (You could emulate it full screen if you wanted on your computer using PPSSPP.) I think I know your tastes well enough to know you'd enjoy it. - I have put some time into Crystalis earlier this week, and it's good thus far. I plan to finish it, then move on to Beyond Oasis after that. BO is supposed to only be 6 hours long, I can squeeze that in. I've barely done any video gaming at all in the past two weeks, been busy with other hobbies and real life stuff. But I can feel the call of the pixels stirring again.

Depending on how quickly you suss things out, you can finish Crystalis pretty quickly. I feel like the HLTB time is an overestimate... but I've also played through it a few times, so I mostly remember where to go. I've actually been bouncing between that and Alundra right now, which I'm playing via the UnWorked patch. I'm still pretty floored that Alundra is supposed to be 30 hours. I should look and see how long it took me back in the day. That's a long time for an ARPG!
Anyway, I kinda jumped into Crystalis it thinking I'd see how my thoughts track with yours, although mine obviously won't be a truly fresh perspective. Also, I wanted the GBC version to be good, but they butchered the soundtrack (and other things).

Depending on how quickly you suss things out, you can finish Crystalis pretty quickly. So far I've not been using a manual or strategy guide. The NPCs do a pretty good job of informing you what to do. Yeah the GBC version is a mess. Worst offender being that zoomed in view, so enemies attack you from off screen, or you run into them accidentally 'cause you can't see them. No thanks.

Yeah, there might be a few cryptic things, but it's nothing like the worst NES games. Not sure how far you're in, but you'll also get access to other hints as well.
I'm already pretty far in my replay - Level 13/16 already. I think I'm missing some stuff; this is definitely one of my fastest playthroughs of the game. I always forget little things here and there, but overall I haven't had to remind myself of anything via a guide. I guess I already burned the trickier bits into my brain!

Not sure how far you're in Level 5, just reached the gas filled spooky forest.

That's solid progress. Looking forward to comparing notes when you finish it. Or even if you don't! You'll probably already figure this out, but occasionally you'll find high EXP enemies - when I do, I usually like to stop and farm for a bit. It doesn't take long, honestly, and you'll know when it's time to move on by the EXP targets. I'm trying not to give too many pointers, 'cause I know how you prefer to hack it without any assistance. Just be aware I'm showing remarkable restraint right now.

I don't know if this should be my second dungeon (with how open the map is, but the Meditation Valkyrie thingy pointed me this direction) ... but I can't guard break these guys at all. Luckily Jelanda can one shot them with Fire Lance...
I reset on the boss here too. There were two mages that could basically two shot me. I learned that the bow can attack the back rows, so I went back in with that approach from the start and managed.
I'm definitely confused about the progression in this game. The first "Period" ended and Freya said I did bad. There's still only two dungeons on the map in 1-2. I've recruited 2 more characters... so just winging it now I guess.

You'll probably already figure this out, but occasionally you'll find high EXP enemies - when I do, I usually like to stop and farm for a bit. Indeed, I did do that once so far. Crystalis seems to require farming levels occasionally, which is to be expected given its age. It doesn't take too long to grind a level or two. However, this game seems especially stingy with its money drops, and items are quite expensive in comparison. I got tired of having to wait for my sword charge to refill, and then aim it manually to shoot enemies. So I started using a controller with auto-fire. Now I just plow into enemies with my sword reciprocating extremely fast, acting more like a chainsaw. Literally just push against enemies and mince them, very reminiscent of Adol's attack style in Ys III: Wanderers from Ys. That offensive method works great so far, and is faster than the charge and shoot. I assume eventually I'll reach enemies that are too dangerous to hug and stab though. I can't guard break these guys at all / I'm definitely confused about the progression in this game Byzantine "how do I attack/defend correctly" methods are what wrecked me in Valkyrie Profile 2: Silmeria. I remember one particular boss just eviscerated me while I did no damage to it. I never did finish VP2 because of that. But I don't recall having that problem with VP1. However, I do remember reading the manual for VP1, so that surely helped (I should read VP2's manual - and will next time I play it). In my experience tri-Ace releases tend to be RTFM games. So here's the manual for VP1: replacementdocs.com/download.php?view.1203
