I played through a session of Zombie Revenge It was a decade ago, but I quite enjoyed beating Zombie Revenge. Albeit I beat the game co-op, so that may have added to the experience.
-
Die Hard Arcade is the best 3D beat 'em up that SEGA made, up until the Yakuza games. - Last night I finished two more zones in Sonic Rush. I'm probably halfway through the game now. I'm still of the mindset that Rush is a downgrade compared to Sonic Advance 3. But I'll finish it anyway.

Better or worse than Sonic Advance 1? (I've beaten Rush, and there were some annoying elements for sure. I generally enjoyed it, or I wouldn't have finished it, though.)

I'd put Rush about on par with SA1. SA2 and SA3 are considerably better than Rush though.

At work with the network all like...
But dug around, and had MAME and some ROMs on my flash drive, so what's a self-respecting gamer to do? Beat some games! One of which was actually a Sega one, Desert Breaker. So yeah, it's a very clear Mercs clone, with the added quirk of an invincible running dash move that the game clearly expects you to use well. And... uh, I mostly didn't. But what's here is pretty solid, even if it doesn't feel quite as nice as Mercs. I'll give this one a 6.5/10.

A'ight, made a mostly legit run through Kung Fu Kid. It takes some cues from Spartan X/Kung Fu, but also has some larger, don't-just-go-right levels. Reversed kick/jump buttons, but you'll eventually get used to that. You can also use the sprite limit to your advantage if you have enemies chasing behind you that can't catch up. I literally just walked through the last level with no resistance because I lined 'em up just right. Anyway, stage 5 and 6 are my weak points, but I figured out late that the little objects I was picking up were sealing cards (called talismans in the manual), and I could kill the zombies with them. Made that a lot easier. Stage 6 is a pure boss rush, and if you die at any of them, you go back to the start. Not fun! I decided to save state through that a little bit, although I have no doubts I'd have been able to push through with a little practice and luck. Not sure what to score this one. I feel like 6/10 is almost too high, given how many NES games I give 6.5/10 and I like a lot more. But this did have its charm, so we'll go with it. Don't expect anything amazing, but it's fine. Now maybe I should look at the unfortunately-titled Dragon Wang next. EDIT: Or not. It's... not very good. Like a chuggy, bad knockoff of Kung Fu.

Never heard of Desert Breaker before, but yeah Mercs clone looks accurate. At one point I owned Kung Fu Kid, but never did finish it. Back then I thought Kung Fu on NES was better, despite being simpler. Pretty sure Kung Fu Kid was uh, "inspired" by that one.

Forgot that I did a run through Last Bronx last night. Saturn version, in "Saturn" mode. Pretty fun - you can tell it's one of the early weapons-based fighters along with Soul Blade. I think that game is probably better, at least for my tastes, but I was also impressed that this felt pretty solid, too. And you can whittle down health in a hurry, and the short timer reflects that. Only 30 seconds per match! It was pretty easy overall, so I don't know what level I was on. Towards the end, just my guy's four-hit combo was enough to chew massive chunks of health down, and just a simple block/counter or wait until they closed into range was enough.
As you might can guess, with only eight characters and such short matches, it was done in... I'd say ten minutes. I think the in-game timer was just under six minutes. But much like Virtua Fighter, it feels like the game has some hidden depth that I'd need to learn at higher levels. And really, it owes a lot to that game - it's almost like a midpoint between Soul Blade and VF in feel. I'll give this one a 7.5, and fans of Sega brawlers might even like it more.

That's a tempting one. Looks like it's on some other platforms too. I dig the look of it a lot.

Yeah, I tried to play the PC port but never could get it working right - it would always run too fast. I did try the actual arcade version, and got my head absolutely handed to me a while back, so it was nice to not play against ridiculously aggressive AI. It... was probably too far the other way, though, but that's what menu options are for next time.

The arcade version is probably equivalent to Hard, but it's quite manageable once you're comfortable with the basics. I really liked The Last Bronx, and wished there had been sequels. It does have some depth to it (the HG101 article goes into details).
