This month's Club Retro theme is brought to us by toei ...
"The idea for my monthly theme came to me after watching the boxing anime masterpiece Ashita no Joe earlier this year. I was trying to think of a category of games that we don't usually talk about that might be fun to check out.
The theme is Combat Sports. Karate, boxing, wrestling, MMA, kickboxing... It doesn't have to be a hardcore realistic sim, but it should have something to do with the actual sport. Hybrid games like Saturday Night Slam Masters and Battle K-Road are fine (both are pretty cool btw), but straight up VS fighters aren't in the spirit of this theme.
I'm a fan of the arcade game The Karate Tournament, by Mitchell. It's like an updated, faster, smoother Karate Champ. It's both simple and technical, all about creating openings and following through.
There are tons of boxing games. Of course most of us have played Punch-Out, but I'm curious if any of us can get into one of the many more serious boxing sims. It's a whole universe of games I know next to nothing about.
I'm sure we all have wrestling games we like; the subgenre has some great games, and it tends to be very accessible compared to other combat sports games. I'd like to check out some of those legendary Japanese series that never made it here, or only did recently, including Sega's All Japan Pro-Wrestling on the Saturn, which feature Wolf and Jeffrey from Virtua Fighter fighting alongside real-life wrestlers.
There's a bunch of UFC games; they seem pretty close to wrestling games, with more striking options.
For kickboxing, there were many Japan-exclusive based on K-1 on the PSX and Saturn. Of course, any other combat sport is good too. There's even a sumo game or two out there!"
