Not even sure if this thread will be worthwhile, but maybe it'll stir a few posts.
This was a very slow year for modern gaming in ways and even then, I'm still mildly puzzled by just how few modern games I beat this year. As of 12/13/2021, I'm at 60 Retro games, 14 Modern. Granted modern games thesedays tend to consistently be longer time sinks but yeah, still amusing.
2021 Favorites: 1. Metroid Dread - Even better than Bloodstained for me and even some of the 2D Metroid games. This seriously feels like the best one since NES and Super to me. The music is a big sore spot though, it's really forgettable. 2. Resident Evil Village - RE8 goes back into the RE4 styled campiness and was better than RE7 in every way for my tastes. Like Dread, I played RE8 twice back to back (higher difficulty on a NG+). RE8 is up there in the high RE ranks for me and one I know I'll be revisiting a lot over the years. 3. Halo Infinite - 343 finally made a great Halo for me. It's Big Halo 1 with some new blood in there. Good stuff.
Looks like I did hit up some good NeoRetro stuff though, good enough that these went on my growing notepad file to reference my favorites:
- Cyber Shadow
- Devil Engine
- Blaster Master Zero 2 - Touhou Luna Nights - Record of Lodoss War-Deedlit in Wonder Labyrinth-
Valfaris was pretty solid too, but that one and Bloodstained: Curse of the Moon 2 I wouldn't slot up there with my favorites. But still recommended to fans of such things.
Two other modern games I greatly enjoyed this year that are non-2021 games, would be Metroid Exodus and Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order.

Definitely. I have more "new-to-me" modern games that scored very highly this year. And I'm not surprised you didn't beat that many modern games, given the big honking classic RPGs you finished this year.
My 9.0 games:
20) Final Fantasy 7 Remake / PS4 / 9.0 / 40h30m / Feb 19 41) Record of Lodoss War: Deedlit in Wonder Labyrinth / PC / 9.0 / 6h30m / Mar 28 112) Metroid Dread / Switch / 9.0 / 9h12m / Oct 14
FF7R shocked me with how good it was. I'm looking forward to more for sure. Lodoss might be stripped down from SotN, but dang if it doesn't play really well, and it's gorgeous. Metroid Dread sees the series return to form. Must-play for series fans.
My 8.5 games:
76) Panzer Paladin / Switch / 8.5 / 4h30m / Jul 5 83) Blasphemous / PC / 8.5 / 19h27m / Aug 1 119) Zelda II: Amida's Curse / NES / 8.5 / 6h / Dec 11
Panzer Paladin has that Natsume/Sunsoft NES feel, and I'm here for it. Blasphemous is a super-dark Metroidvania, but it's a good one, too. Glad I went through it. Amida's Curse is one of the best ROM hacks I've played. Absolutely give it a go.
And the 8.0:
96) Immortals: Fenyx Rising / Switch / 8.0 / 45h0m / Aug 30
There are areas where it excels compared to Breath of the Wild and areas where it falters, but the entire experience was really fun. I'm looking forward to doing more in it if there's ever a "GOTY" edition, especially since it supports cross-saves between platforms.

Panzer Paladin, Blasphemous, and Amida's Curse, yeah those all look like a good time. I was iffy on Blasphemous but seeing even you liked it, kind of convinces me to check it out.
I slot Touhou Luna Nights and Lodoss War on my NeoRetro favorites list for now, but I feel like they're kind of just loosely hanging on. I beat both and felt like there was still a little more missing to them. Maybe a bit too stripped down from the SoTN flavored stuff for my tastes, but I can't really complain. Fun romps for a few hours.
I already kind of want to revisit Cyber Shadow, so that one was excellent to me.

As usual, I didn't play anywhere near the amount of modern stuff you guys did. (Not that there's anything wrong with playing as much modern as retro!) But I did finish some stuff that was less than 10 years old this year. So here's what I beat in order of best to less: A Way Out (PS4) - 9/10 - Absolutely the best co-op game I've ever played, fantastic. Mass Effect 3 (360) 9/10 - A nice cap off to the original trilogy, though not as strong as its predecessors. Beyond Blue (PS4) - 7/10 - Pretty good SCUBA diving simulator with a pleasant plot. Garfield Kart: Furious Racing (PS4) - 7/10. Surprisingly decent Mario Kart clone with a great IP. Nickelodeon Kart Racers 2: Grand Prix (PS4) - 6/10 - An improved sequel, but still best for kids. Nickelodeon Kart Racers (PS4) - 5/10 - Not particularly great but would be good for kids. 3D Mini Golf (PS4) - 5/10 - Rather bland mini golf sim, but I enjoy mini golf so I finished it. Those are all the modern games I finished this year, according to my HLTB. -
At the very end of this month, I plan to make a post listing every game I beat in 2021, along with stats.

At the very end of this month, I plan to make a post listing every game I beat in 2021, along with stats. I don't see myself beating anymore games before 2022, so here's my stats/games beat for this year:
So a sum total of 8 days 3 hours 42 minutes 16 seconds invested this year, into the games I beat anyway. That doesn't count various games I played for a while but dropped. Or the 13 hours I have invested into Dark Souls thus far.
The only modern gaming I did was on PS4 and 360 (for Mass Effect 3). Getting a PS4 early this year lead me to do more modern gaming than I normally do by a mile.
I beat a total of 61 games in 2021. Here they are, and how much time I put into each:3D Mini Golf 1h 30m A Way Out 6h 15m Ace Combat 2 1h 54m All-Star Fighters 25m Battle Cars 3h 35m Beyond Blue 2h 45m Beyond Oasis 5h 54m Blue Breaker Burst: Bishou o Anata 10m Blue Breaker Burst: Egao no Asu ni 20m Bomber Raid 35m Chocobo Racing 1h 15m Cutie Suzuki no Ringside Angel 40m Dead or Alive Paradise 1h Einhander 57m Elemental Gearbolt 45m F-Zero 1h 35m FIST 20m Fatal Fury: Wild Ambition 20m 41s Fighting Angels 20m Garfield Kart - Furious Racing 1h Girly Block 2h 45m Gradius Gaiden 50m Gun-Nac 2h 45m Hajime no Ippo: The Fighting! 2h Jackal 45m Keio Flying Squadron 56m Konami Krazy Racers 1h 35m Link's Crossbow Training 35m M.U.S.H.A. 45m Mass Effect 3 1d 17h Mega Man Battle & Chase 1h 35m Metroid Prime Pinball 30m Monstania 4h 15m My-Otome: Otome ButÅshi!! 35m Mystic Defender 1h Omega Boost 47m 37s Panzer Bandit 1h 15m Phantasmagoria 5h 50m Philosoma 57m Project: Horned Owl 1h 10m Queen's Blade: Spiral Chaos 1d 3h 50m 58s Rapid Reload 1h 30m Running High 45m Samurai Shodown: Warriors Rage 45m Shin Megami Tensei: Digital Devil Saga 1d 3h 41m Simple 1500 Series Vol. 24: The Gun Shooting 35m Sonic Advance 1h 25m Sonic Advance 2 1h 25m Sonic Advance 3 2h 25m Sonic Rush 3h 30m Soul Blade 20m Spellcaster 4h 30m The Adventure of Little Ralph 1h 35m The Final Fantasy Legend 12h Time Crisis 25m Twinkle Tale 1h 05m Vertical Force 33m Wade Hixton's Counter Punch 2h Wily and Light no Rock Board: That's Paradise 35m X-Zone 36m Yoshi's Safari 45mWhat's interesting is I also beat 61 games last year. I think between what I put into DQ6, DQ8, Valkyrie Profile (10 hours), Phantasy Star IV, Front Mission 4, SMT3, and maybe something else, that's like 300 hours of JRPG's alone.
It's always funny how bloated my PC numbers are on HLTB, while I've never proclaimed myself to be a pure "PC gamer". But I guess that's ports, indie games, double dipping for some old FPS replays, etc all adding up in the long run.
My current top 3 totals: PC -100 - 20.96% PlayStation - 48 - 10.06% PlayStation 4 - 47 - 9.85%

Yeah you had a helluva year for RPGs in general. And it's awesome to see someone else beating King's Field games around here. I forgot you played through Dark Souls this year as well, no wonder you always know what I'm talking about in detail, it's still fresh on your mind.

I go through it so quickly nowadays, even I kind of forgot for a moment I beat it again this year haha. It's like a ~20 hour run for me now. This should be the last time I play that one for awhile though. I'm excited to revisit the later ones again, but it's all about Elden Ring now!!
I was actually talking about this with another friend, outside of Elden Ring I'm drawing a total blank on anything else modern gaming wise for 2022 that excites me. I wonder if it'll be another slow year like 2021. But that's a non issue for me with so many retro games I still want to play and have around. I'm excited for my own personal plans to hit up Dragon Quest 11, another Front Mission, and more SMT in 2022.

This game looks 10x better than a Bayonetta 3 could ever be though. Definitely like a top 5-10 for me and modern upcoming releases.
I'm excited about that weird Team Ninja Final Fantasy/Nioh game too.
But yeah just not sure about any hard dates for 2022 yet.
I'm definitely starting to wonder if Breath of the Wild 2 will be on current Switch hardware or not. Metroid Prime 4 as well.
