I saw Super Mario Bros. and the first TMNT both in the theater when they originally released. As a kid I thought the SMB movie was utterly insane and not at all what I wanted, whereas I thought the TMNT movie was awesome and exactly what I wanted. Super Mario Bros. movie = dumpster fire (no offense Xeogred!) Mortal Kombat movie = guilty pleasure at best Tomb Raider movie = almost works as a normal movie but not quite TMNT = Are we allowed to consider this as a video game movie? I mean, there were TMNT video games. If so, would that make TMNT the savior of bad 90's video game movies?

As campy as the first Mortal Kombat movie is, the theme song still rocks. Also Highlander playing Raiden was cool. Ya Xeogred, I have to agree with everyone else--even as a kid the Super Mario Movie was terrible. That all said, my kids have *really* gotten into the TMNT cartoon from the 80s/90s. Luckily I can still watch this one, especially the intro--which I didn't realize they say TMNT 12 times in. I haven't decided if I'm going to show the movies. Although, I'll have to at least show them the Ninja Rap music video. O, man... TMNT = Are we allowed to consider this as a video game movie? I mean, there were TMNT video games. If so, would that make TMNT the savior of bad 90's video game movies? I was going to point out your avatar, but then I found out The Wizard is from 1989. Well played.

Even for The Wizard I felt as though it was an amazing time capsule of 80's Nintendo gaming, but I'm not sure it counts as a good movie. XD

To clarify, this movie is a "so bad it's good" guilty pleasure for me... absolutely not something I'll go bat for if people hate it. No problem with that.
The first Mortal Kombat movie is definitely legit.

In 1994, I enjoyed the Street Fighter film, but mainly 'cause of Jean-Claude Van Damme. I wouldn't say it's a good film overall. The Mortal Kombat movies of the '90s were the best "films based on video games".

The Mortal Kombat movie s of the '90s were the best "films based on video games". I finally got around to watching the Street Fighter Movie last year. Everyone in it was unlikeable and the sets looked like they belonged in a Nickelodeon game show. But I liked it in an unintentionally funny, MST3K kind of way. I told chibby, "This movie is a monument to mankind's hubris." In the early 2000's I begrudgingly enjoyed Mortal Kombat 1 although I preferred the Tomb Raider movie. Apparently people my age are looking back fondly on the MK movie for how unapologetically 90's it is but I haven't been in any hurry to see it again. I did recently watch Mortal Combat Annihilation with chibby on a VHS tape found at a thrift store. When we were through I took the tape out in the driveway and destroyed it with an axe.

When we were through I took the tape out in the driveway and destroyed it with an axe. Performing a fatality on a Mortal Kombat tape is fitting. There was another MK movie (the third one) that released last year. I have not seen it yet.

I do like the first MK movie. It's crazy '90s, sure, but it has legitimate qualities beyond that. Mostly, the pacing is really good. They balanced the character and story scenes with action scenes really well, the fights don't drag on, and there's a nice variety to the action because of all the characters. That's one of the reasons why a tournament is the perfect set up for a movie about fighting. I still found it watchable as an adult, which is not true for the vast majority of the movies of its type I tried rewatching. The second MK movie was awful, though. I saw MK in the theater and the cliffhanger ending had us all hyped for the sequel, but it took forever to come out (or at least it felt like it as a child), and by then I didn't even hear about it. Only got around to it in my '20s, and all I can remember about it is hating it.

Only got around to it in my '20s, and all I can remember about it is hating it. I enjoyed the 1st MK movie even though I did not like it, if that makes sense. It's been over 15 years since I've last seen it, since I was never in any hurry to repeat the experience. Yet while watching MK Annihilaton with chibby I caught myself thinking about MK1 even though so much time had passed. I just couldn't get over how superior MK1 was compared to MKA. I didn't think MK1 was good in the first place, but at least it starts off by grounding things on planet earth and introducing each of the fighter and their IRL jobs (cop, movie star, etc.) Next magic inter-dimensional ninjas and their ilk slowly get introduced. The human fighters are like, "Whaaaat? No way!" Then finally it culminates with them fighting in the tournament and saving earth. But in MK Annihilation they don't build up to any of that stuff at all. They just dive right in and go seven hundred miles an hour non stop until the movie slams into a brick wall and knocks itself unconscious. It's like being locked in a room with a hyperactive 6 year old.
