I must be weird. I LOVED the Super Mario Bros movie and always tried to record the whole movie whenever it aired on TV. For a time, I had horrible luck managing to record it but it was eventually released on DVD and it is now a part of my collection (and it’s on my personal Plex server).
When I was kid, I thought it was a given that the movie version was going to be widely different from the source material. In fact, I usually thought that the games were based on the shows or movies. If a cartoon existed, it’s because it was based on a movie (Batman). If toys existed, it’s because of the show (Batman). If comics existed, it’s because of the movie (Batman). I was a kid when Batman Returns came out (so I think that puts me at just a few years younger than most other members here) and Batmania seems to have returned for it.
Anyway, when I grew a little older but not yet in the double digits, I made it a game to figure out how the SMB movie tied together parts of the games (which by now, I knew were games first). I could point out similarities to SMB2, Super Mario Kart (I had my own game console for a few years now, the cool Super Nintendo, much better than my neighbor’s NES or so everyone thought). Obviously, SMB World is a major influence on the movie (as well as Blade Runner…).
It’s obvious to me now that the SMB movie ended up as one of those projects that was written based on what the writers actually wanted to do but slapping on recognizable characters because their own characters or stories wouldn’t have sold… and they were paid to do so anyway. I suppose I shouldn’t like it but I can’t help but have fond memories of it. It’s such a stupid movie but I love it regardless. If I had been a little older when it had come out, I feel like I would have shared the same disappointment as many others on here.
