Personal recommendations:
-The Legendary Axe (PCE) - one of the best sidescrollers of its type, with a very satisfying feel. The Legendary Axe 2 is completely different, and not as good, but it's still decent, and there are very other games of this genre worth playing for the system.
-Gate of Thunder (PCE CD) - very fun, well-balanced and well-made traditional space shmup
-Psycho Chaser (PCE) - a good example of my favorite shmup subgenres, those that star humans/humanoids on foot. Think of games like Elemental Master, not Commando, as the screen still auto-scrolls and you're always facing up, so the action is more focused and precise. It's dark and gritty and stars a robot and was made by Sting, which was started by former Compile staff.
-Double Dragon 2 (PCE-CD) - this is different, and better, than the NES DD2, and stands as the only good, proper beat-'em-up on those systems.
-Coryoon: Child of a Dragon (PCE) - excellent beginner-level shmup, it manages to be action-packed and easy at the same type, without taking any control away from you.
-Exile (PCE-CD) - great sidescroller/RPG hybrid that has you travelling time and half the world, meeting (and sometimes killing) famous historical figures as an assassin. With a great soundtrack remixed by Yuzo Koshiro, IIRC. It's better and more complete than the Genesis version.
-Xak 3 (PCE-CD) - really cool action RPG in the old-school Ys tradition, where a million things happen in like 5 minutes. No bump system, so you haters will be happy.

Lords of Thunder is my favorite Turbografx 16 CD game ever. It looks and sounds amazing and is a blast to play.

This is gonna be a good month. Hopefully I'll find some stuff to dig into - I've been needing to roll back around to the Duo.
I still need to play through the PC Engine version of Lords of Thunder. I saw Shmup Junkie's review of both, and he makes it pretty clear that the Duo game bests the Sega CD version in gameplay, despite being quite even in presentation. (Basically, the Sega version is super easy, which is probably a reason I still liked it.)

Yes this could be an interesting month. Though I won't be playing TG/PCE carts/cards, just the CD based stuff. Optical media is the theme.
Looking at my HLTB for the past ten years, these are applicable games I rated a 7/10 or better to:
Advanced V.G. Exile Fausseté Amour Fray CD: Xak Gaiden Lords of Thunder Steam-Heart's Sylphia Ys III: Wanderers from Ys
So I'll recommend those.
Not sure what I'll play yet, but there's definitely some promising stuff out there.

Dang we're already a week into July. Well, I have picked out 5 PCE-CD games I'm interested in. All of them are action-oriented, nothing too long. I'll save the longest one for last. Should have time this weekend to take out at least one game.

Time has definitely been weird lately and I'm still in a weird rut, but I plan to play some Lords of Thunder this weekend!

Title: Renny BlasterPlatform: PC Engine CD Region release played: Japan Year of release: 1995 Developer: J-Force Publisher: NEC Avenue, Ltd. Graphics: 4/5 Audio: 2/5 Challenge: 2/5 Fun factor: 3/5
Renny Blaster is a 2D beat-em-up/action-platformer hybrid, having the player choose to control paranormal private investigator Fujiro Yarai, or a man with a mysterious past and supernatural abilities named Seishiro. Seishiro is physically weaker and relies on magic, whereas Fujiro fights with punches and kicks. Both protagonists seek to prevent a cabal run by a vampire from taking control over Europe. Stages are generally straightforward side-scrolling, fighting enemies with occasional platforming, and boss battles at the end. Renny Blaster is a bit like a beat 'em up Castlevania, and is recommended to action-platformer fans looking for an idiosyncratic bit of genre exposé.
+Strong 2D graphics in general for its age and platform.
+Lots of dubbed voice dialogue and cinematic cutscenes.
+The two protagonists offer considerably different play styles. +Lots of new moves/new spells to unlock per character.
+Good variety of bosses.
-All of the copious dialogue/text is Japanese and there's no English fan trans yet.
-The platforming sections are rather awful. -The OST is pretty bad in general.
-The background graphics are weaker than the sprites/cutscenes. -Fairly low difficulty. Ex's time to beat: ~2 hours Ex's rating: 6/10

Dayyyyum, that's some slick PC-88/98 styled pixel art right there. Looks like a decent time.

I played through this one. It's very, very straightforward, much more than Castlevania, and it never gets even a little hard, but it's nice aesthetically and the cutscenes have a particular style to them. Think of it as a pleasant videogame stroll or something. It's worth the hour or so.
