I'd play that mermaid RPG in a heartbeat, too. It's not like I'm a mermaid fan in general, but when I used to play lots of RPGs, I really dug when they had underwater sections - Breath of Fire and Dragon Quest VI especially had some cool underwater sections, as did Lufia 2 IIRC - and one of my dream games was an underwater RPG. So I'd have to try it. From that list, I can tell Ex is planning to hit those four games up with his experimental auto-translation setup. I have to say, auto-translation from Japanese seems to have improved considerably, though it's still not consistent enough for me that I'd play a RPG through it. Just recently I tried auto-translating a few manga summaries while doing some research and the first one was surprisingly coherent. There was only one major mistake, the rest made sense and actually read like proper English. The next couple summaries weren't so good - the AI is really dumb when it comes to guessing the subject of the sentence or what gender the person is, and sometimes it just spits out complete nonsense. But it used to be that you could barely decipher some info here and there, and now you occasionally get actual half-decent translations, at least for a paragraph or two.

planning to hit those four games up with his experimental auto-translation setup Yep. It's not ideal. It's not as polished as a human translation by a mile. But there are so many Japanese games I want to play, that have zero chance of getting English fan translations, that it's my only solution. Yeah I could learn Japanese, but that's a life investment I'm just not willing to endure right now. I'd rather deal with quirky half-ass machine translations. That's better than never playing these games at all.

Yeah, I get you. Who's gonna translate Mermaid RPG? I took a few Japanese lessons a few years ago, and my conclusion was this: I could definitely learn to speak and understand Japanese with some effort... but learning to read and write it seems out of the question. I'm not willing to spend my life doing that.

I'm not willing to spend my life doing that Exactly. It's a serious, no joke life investment. We're talking thousands of hours, years, to become proficient at reading and writing Japanese. To do it in any reasonable amount of time, it becomes a full time job in and of itself. I'll take the AI Engrish.

I always wanted to learn Japanese, too, but then I realized there are so many games that do have translations that I haven't finished that I'm like... is this a good use of my time? Probably not.

In middle school I got a D in Spanish, which everyone seems to say is the easiest for an English speaker to pickup. My mom likes joking with me nowadays how at parent teacher conferences, the teacher told her "This isn't for him, do not make him take more of this", something to that extent.
I did better in French, but all I remember is eating some pastries.
Took Japanese in college. The whole class laughed at how bad I was sometimes. Dropped it eventually.
But yeah, hopefully I live in an era someday where I can just put some devices on my head and face, then enjoy Japan, Korea, etc.

When I was in high school we had the choice of French or Spanish. I chose Spanish because I figured that was a language I may actually use someday. I took two years of Spanish and passed the classes. Years later, in various jobs I've had, I have indeed used Spanish to talk with coworkers or customers from Latin America countries. I can wing it but I'm not good at it. I always start the conversation with mi español es muy malo. Always gets a laugh.

Wouldn't German be closer to English, and potentially easier? Not that I know anything about it.
I know for English speakers, the biggest struggle with French is the fact that every noun is gendered. While it makes sense when referring to people, there's no real rule to it that I know of for objects; you just have to know whether, say, a truck is masculine or feminine (for the record, it's un camion, so it's manly, like you'd expect a truck to be). I know as a French speaker, the easiest languages to learn would be Spanish and Italian. I can read text in either and understand it sometimes, despite never having had an Italian lesson. So many words are similar. Of course, it's harder to understand when spoken. It's also easier for me to pronounce Japanese than for an English speaker, because the vowels sound similar. The same would be true for any Latin language speaker.

In my experience, never really heard anyone in person say that German was easy.
I think it's just that the US has such a huge Hispanic population that it's so common, people tend to assume it should be the second language anyone here picks up. Maybe how Canada has its French speaking areas? Not sure though.
Japanese would be the dream though, with us retro gaming/anime fans here and all. But yeah... probably a full time job to get decent at it haha.
