I haven't played much modern stuff or anything too huge since Elden Ring, so yeah it was bubbling up I guess. Don't think I could have done them directly back to back, hah.
You still gotta play Xenogears I think...

Edit:
Ex here, I moved this thread from off topic to VVGD because it's become its own thing.

I played Xenogears when it originally debuted, I rented it the first week it released in the USA. I played it for an hour or two then dumped it. All I remember at the time was being annoyed at a high encounter rate coupled with a slow battle system (the combo melee stuff). Granted that was a long time ago, with a replay it might click all these years later. I don't recall ever talking to someone who's played through Xenogears and didn't love it.

It is unfortunately JRPG #9658 with a rather slooooow start. Gotta power through that first hour or few.
For as much as you hate NGE, Xenogears might make you hate it even more. Since the influence is there in spots and some concepts, but Xenogears does it all 100x better.

Xenogears does it all 100x better All that would take is omitting Shinji entirely.

I really liked Xenogears back in the day. Of course, I spent quite some time even trying to acquire a copy. SquareSoft ended up doing another print run on it, and I remember ordering it online from GameStop all the way back in 2001 while I was in England. It definitely starts slow, but I enjoyed the on-foot combo system (it's a lot better than Chrono Cross' system, in my opinion), and was always a little disappointed how basic the mech combat felt in comparison. The biggest change I'd make (outside of fleshing out the second disc a bit more) is INCREASE. THE. TEXT. SPEED. Way too much reading to have it crawl by so slowly.

Xenogears (character combat) Xenosaga III (both character/mecha) Xenoblade X Xenoblade Torna Xenoblade 3
As a XENOHEAD, these are the ones with the best combat systems to me. XB2's was a huge improvement over XB1, but Torna really perfected that style and took out the fluff. Also nothing wrong with Xenogears' mecha combat, but I was just a bit bummed that the back half of the game has way more of that than the combat on foot, which I liked a bit more. Plus, a certain character gets a sword with a ton of new moves, but the rug is pulled out from under you since you barely get to use it. It never feels like the cool combat system there hit its full potential in ways. It's definitely way better than Chrono Cross'.
Honestly, I wonder if there's a chance Square and Nintendo + Monolith Soft could cook up a deal to remaster Xenogears, as they have with a ton of games from that era lately and to a lot of success in ways. They go the extra mile by putting in lost content and stuff too, so there's surely a chance Xenogears' second disc could be more fleshed out. I'd only want this to happen if Tetsuya Takahashi could work on it personally though.

My only problem with Xenogears's battles was that you learned all the moves long before the end, which made the latter portion's battle more boring. I also preferred the character battles, though it was cool to have both. Don't remember the encounter rate being an issue at the time... there are few dungeons in the game, which is just fine, but they're too damn long. Still, masterpiece. Best turned-based PSX RPG.

I enjoyed the on-foot combo system That's all I had experienced before I quit. I remember the turn-based attacks being melee and requiring fighting game inputs. An idea that seemed interesting at first but quickly became tedious versus the high encounter rate. I felt much the same way about Super Robot Taisen OG Saga: Endless Frontier's overly long combos making every random battle take forever. Dang 'cause that's what I went into Xenogears to do in the first place. I wanted to pilot mechs in battle, not attack blob enemies with kung fu. Scourge of many JRPGs. I've never understood this. Maybe it's because with Japanese writing on screen, each Japanese character represents more information, so it's okay for those to appear slowly. But in English having each simple letter appear so slowly is just ridiculous. Nintendo + Monolith Soft could cook up a deal to remaster Xenogears A remaster that also finished the second disc as originally intended would be ideal. which is just fine, but they're too damn long I remember watching a friend play through the sewer dungeon for a while. Looked like the most boring JRPG ever at that point.

I think you just had weird expectations with the battle system back in the day or something. You'll probably dig it now. On another note, if I really had to pick only one classic/traditional styled JRPG for the most part, I'd maybe settle on Xenogears. That said? It is quite possibly the most BORING game ever to watch anyone else play. I'm not a nap guy, but I remember falling asleep watching someone play it a few years prior to when I finally took the plunge. I do remember watching another friend play more in middle school though, but all I remembered was the endless textboxes. I think that applies to most RPG's to me in general that aren't ARPG's or whatever. Pretty boring to watch, but Xenogears is on another level. Actually playing and sinking into yourself... life changing.

The sewer dungeon is by far the worst part of the game. You're running around trying to find a monster, so maybe a FAQ can really speed it up.
