Yeah, the CV3 FDS OST is seriously rocking. I'm guessing since it's Japanese only it has the additional checkpoints too? That might be a good version to replay as well. I was not a huge fan of CV3 NES when I finally played it years ago, simply because it was the US version with a few crucial checkpoints gone near the end.
I never owned Metroid as a kid, but it was a frequent rental and my dad's side of the family had it for his younger brothers. I usually got stuck in Norfair. They had an end game password though. So it was always kind of bizarre jumping into Tourain with the Varia Suit and all heh.

This is the type of board I've been looking for - I hate Discord and apps like it, and I want to focus on retro stuff in general anyway, as that's where most of my gaming time and energy goes these days. Then you're a prime candidate for HRG. As an admin let me stress this; If you don't see topics that interest you, feel free to create them. New threads are always a boon. Kudos to you on taking that initiative and creating this one. We've discussed Discord a few times around here. Pretty sure we're all against it. Consensus being, Discord is weak where forums are strong. And some of us are old enough to realize Discord is just mIRC/ICQ in modern clothes anyway. Konami does seem like they're neck and neck with Nintendo as the best developer on the Disk System. I would throw Capcom in that ring too. so we could keep from crossing the streams too much Yep, best not to do that.
Esper Dream is a slick little Konami ARPG where you trigger battles and then fight enemies in enclosed walled-off rooms. Lovely soundtrack. Thanks for the info on the FDS games, and sounds like Esper Dream is definitely worth playing. And agreed, can't go wrong with classic Konami. I never owned Metroid as a kid I rented it a few times as a kid in the late '80s. It instilled such a palpable sense of mystique in me back then. An intoxicating mix of mystery, intrigue, fear, dread, and joyous exploration. I guess kids these days would find it hard to be immersed in such primitive graphics and audio nowadays, but back in '89 that game felt like its own world. I didn't legit beat Metroid until many years later, I think it was in 2000 when I was 21. Sometime around then. The hardest thing about Metroid on NES was its asinine password system. That's one aspect the FDS version definitely is superior about with its on-disk saving.

> Discord is just mIRC/ICQ in modern clothes anyway.
Makes me hate it even more.
Maaaaaan everything you just said about Metroid, I STILL FEEL. It's why I still put it above Zero Mission personally. The pure black backgrounds with the enclosed claustrophobic interconnected levels and an OST that digs into your organs... there's nothing like Metroid. But Blaster Master is near its camp. Dang, I take it Sunsoft didn't mess with the FDS much? Imagine that...
And yes Kazin , welcome aboard! Good to have you.

I take it Sunsoft didn't mess with the FDS much? Pretty sure these are the only FDS games Sunsoft developed: Adian no Tsue Chitei Tairiku Orudoora Dead Zone (the best of this bunch) Märchen Veil Nazoler Land Sōkan Gō Nazoler Land Dai 2 Gou Nazoler Land Dai-3 Gō Nazoler Land Special!! Quiz Ō o Sagase Super Boy Allan Though at that time Sunsoft was called Sun Electronics Corp. A few other FDS games that are worth checking out: Famicom Grand Prix II: 3D Hot RallyKiki KaiKai: Dotou HenThe Mysterious Murasame CastleYokai YashikiAlso Falsion is rad:

Every time I see Falsion (and Famicom Grand Prix II: 3D Hot Rally), I think to myself that I want a Famicom 3D System set. Why?! Those are just about the only two games I'd play with it, and I have a Virtual Boy, which I barely touch as it is (though I love it lol)!

Sunsoft actually attempted edutainment on the FDS and, well, the games are kinda quirky but not what I'd call mega fun.
And Marchen Veil is quite bad!
Capcom had an awesome Fami library, but not much on the disk. Just Gun.Smoke (also on NES), Section Z (also on NES), and the exclusive Samurai Sword.
Nintendo and Konami dominate the FDS, though the Square library is very intriguing in its own right.

I played a few minutes of Super Boy Allan by Sunsoft and could not figure out what to do, so despite the name being a delight, I gave up on it pretty quickly.
I need to try JJ, the sequel to Tobidase Daisakusen/3D World Runner, which according to a few places, is better than the original (which I sorta like). Though that's one of those 3D games, and it'd tempt me even more into looking into the 3D System lmao

I played a few minutes of Super Boy Allan by Sunsoft and could not figure out what to do Here's the Super Boy Allan manual if you can read Japanese (or want to use translation software): www.gamingalexandria.com/fds/Super%20Boy%20Allan/Super%20Boy%20Allan%20-%20Manual.pdfWorth downloading and viewing anyway, as the game originally came with a cute manga, and it's included in that PDF download. I've never played the FDS/NES 3D stuff in real life. However, when I had a Master System, I had the 3D headset that it supported, and a few 3D games. The SMS 3D worked surprisingly great and was very impressive. If the FDS 3D is anywhere near as good, yeah worth your time.

Kazin : How's your VB holding up? Mine has developed that issue with the screens where the ribbon cable detaches, so only one side works now. I'm thinking of sending it off and getting a permanent fix - there's someone on eBay that does repairs with the solder method, and it looks like they're rated pretty well. I don't trust myself to do that kind of repair. I could probably pull it off, but... yeah, there's still a chance I'd botch it. Ex: Wasn't aware that Capcom did much on the FDS, but looking, apparently they did an adventure game, Samurai Sword? And it also has a translation? Very interesting. Their other two games got ports to cart ( Gun.Smoke and Section Z). The former is decent, and the latter I've always wanted to give run - I know Jeremy Parish was pretty high on the game in the NES Works video. And give Capcom credit, they'd really expand on most of their entries once they got past those early games.

Sarge Works the last time I tested it, about a month ago after we moved (I always freak out about moving classic video game stuff - and it was the first time I moved my enormous Game & Watch collection, which required me to test all those, too, of which I have about 50 because I love those things), and it worked fine. I'm worried about that potential problem down the road too, but I suppose I'll cross that bridge when (not if, I'm sure) I come to it. I've seen a few videos of people doing that repair on YT, but it does look quite difficult, and it's not an easily sourced replacement part, so I may send mine off if I ever have to do that repair. I've had bad luck doing soldering quite that fine so far. I know how I am, and when I do my inevitable next Sendico order, I'll probably pick up a Famicom 3D System. It is a kinda cool looking device, even if I don't use it that much...
