Sounds pretty dang authentic.

I'm not a massive fan of the original Star Fox, but this is still super cool: it has been hacked to use the Super FX 2 instead of the original version. The second revision was clocked much faster, so there are some pretty significant speed improvements. www.romhacking.net/hacks/6333/

That is a cool hack. I've been thinking of replaying Star Fox, this is a good excuse to do so.

It looks much, much more impressive that way. Doesn't feel like a SNES game at all, sound aside.

Yeah, I was really impressed at how much it looks like it improves playability. I'm wanting to say I read somewhere that they always wanted to clock the Super FX at 21 MHz, but the original chip cuts the input clock speed in half. Probably some issues with the silicon and stability or something.

Yep, looks like an excellent excuse for a replay on that one.
Star Fox blew my mind as a kid back in the day. I could beat all three routes and eventually even found some of the secret stages on my own. The OST is incredible and still so unique. I have tons of nostalgia for the game but did always feel it's one maybe best left in the past with my nostalgia, haha. But eh, I'd probably still get over the lag. But with a hack like this that could make it even better.
Loved Star Fox 64 too but I don't know if I ever in my mind decided on a definite favorite between the two. I don't see the original get as much love thesedays but I wouldn't underestimate it for me personally.

I'm sure that factors in. I remember being distinctly less impressed, though. While it was a technical achievement for the console, I'd also had the opportunity to try out Wolfenstein 3D at the local Radio Shack, which looked way better. And adding to that, I just didn't care for the chunky, low-poly look. Sure, it presaged where the industry was going, but to my eyes at the time, it looked pretty awful. And I mostly thought that about most 3D attempts right up until the PS2 (for consoles, anyway - PC continued to blaze trails in that regard). In hindsight? I think I appreciate those early 3D efforts a bit more. I'm still heavily tilted towards the 2D look at the time, just because it was so much superior from an aesthetic perspective, but they definitely have their charms. EDIT: Hmm, FastROM hack/fix of Aladdin? I'll take that. www.romhacking.net/hacks/6322/EDIT 2: Oh, neat, one for Magical Quest 3 as well. That game is nuts on the slowdown.

Gotta differ from Sarge on Wolfenstein 3D VS Star Fox. I had access to both of these games when they first released. Wolfenstein 3D was impressive, but Star Fox blew me away. It felt like the future. With Star Fox we got a fully 3D world (with occasional texture mapping) plus dramatic camera pans and alternate perspective viewpoints. A real sense of "3D space". And shooting at enemies and objects which utilized all three dimensions. Wolfenstein 3D with its 2D sprite enemies and simple ray cast corridors felt "flat" in comparison. (Also, I'd played Catacomb 3-D before it as well.) I played Star Fox relentlessly when it debuted, finishing all three routes and doing the secret stuff as well. And I agree with Xeogred , Star Fox's OST is absolutely stellar and completely unique. Edit: I have also beaten Star Fox 2, Star Fox 64, Star Fox: Assault, and Star Fox Command. I have not played Star Fox Guard, Star Fox Adventures, or Star Fox Zero yet.

I had watched a friend play Doom prior to Star Fox myself. Maybe I saw some other 3D stuff prior as well, but yeah it just blew me away. The SNES did that a lot back then. DKC, Star Fox, Super Mario RPG, etc.
Not too big on Star Fox 2's open-level concept, but I should check it out sometime. I'm guessing that SNES-mini rom version has been dumped now?
I actually think Star Fox's aesthetic is still super appealing to me. Nowadays it's got this cool weird surreal look to it. Something with those visuals and a high framerate would be cool to me, which might be: Ex-Zodiac heh. So I'm keeping tabs on that one.
Since you're hit or miss with 3D Zelda Ex, I don't know if you'd care for Star Fox Adventures. It feels like Zelda for babies. It was a cool romp but I can't help but use it as a punching bag with that knock on it and it's not anything I think about revisiting.
I can maybe elaborate more sometime but I'll just say, I think the Ratchet & Clank series is kind of everything Star Fox could have been if Nintendo tried to evolve it a little more. Fun action/platformer and nearly every R&C has a different take on space traveling via ships, sometimes bordering on Star Fox-esque gameplay... so it just seems like if they wanted to really go BIG and expand Star Fox, it could have been something like R&C in ways. Maybe keep the focus more on the on-rails shooting levels but yeah. Admittedly I haven't played the other newer Star Fox's here and there, but nobody ever really talks about them.

I see Ratchet & Clank as more what a good 3D Mega Man game might look like. Just add some robot masters in, and I could absolutely see it working.
