Yeah, it's like three continues. If you're really good (or lucky), you can rack up 1-Ups by bouncing ravens around in the second level. It's pretty easy to drop them, though, regardless of whether you're using the sword beak or normal attacks. It took me quite a bit of practice to get a legit run in. The last time I jumped back in, I'm pretty sure I lost it in Stage 4 as well. I'd forgotten quite a few of the hazards along the way. A trick I knew from my childhood, heh. Much easier to pull off when you have the bone weapon too.
Yeah I didn't really remember this level AT ALL. I stumbled upon Bootsie's walkthrough of this game again and skimmed through it, I apparently wasn't even like halfway into stage 4 yet. Started getting crazy with those red instant death spikes.
I always recall Rat Race being my kryptonite. But we'll see this time...

Well, remember you can warp in the Turbo Tunnel - maybe you were doing that!

Nah, I remember these levels after the fourth one. I think the Turbo Tunnel skip puts you at level 8 or 9? I'm stopping at 9 for now, after the snake level and the upwards vertical tower climbing one. I've always had a pretty easy time with the surfing level and the snake one. Using save states now though. Why I was overly cocky and feeling happy about playing Battletoads again is now utterly beyond me. The amount of BS / programming issues that cause deaths and just straight up troll design in the levels is truly insane. The boss at the top of the tower level could stomp on you or shoot you even when you're down on the ground and can't do a damn thing. And his bullet combo shaves half your life instantly. Even random normal enemies can sometimes get a lucky one hit kill on you. The work you have to put in to getting health back is hilarious, with the bugs flying around or manipulating those Galaga bug things right. But then yeah probably more than half of the things in this game kills you instantly, what even is the point of health?
Yeah this game is still nuts.

I think the Turbo Tunnel one only skips you to Level 5, the surfboard level. There's a warp in Stage 4 that puts you in the snake pit, which is Stage 6. A warp there will jump you all the way to Level 9, and I think that's as far as it goes.
And yes, the game's reputation is well-deserved. I save-stated to practice a ton before my legit run, and it's still one of my happiest legit wins.

I think the Turbo Tunnel one only skips you to Level 5, the surfboard level. ... Perhaps that explains it a bit and I'm less experienced with level 4, than I am a lot of the other game. Because it's actually kind of easy to accidentally get that warp skip in the Turbo Tunnel. Going from that to the surf level sounds familiar, so maybe that's been the case for me in the past.
Level 4 would probably be more iconic, if people got to it or didn't accidentally skip it haha. This level reminded me so much of the BS in Ghouls' n' Ghosts. Knowing where a snowman is going to be, having to lug those stupid ice blocks around to break down walls without being tripped up by said blocks, then halfway into the level is a bunch of instant death spikes below and above you, everywhere you look. The yellow platforms that moved around were slippery as crap too and easy to fall off. I love how accidentally double tapping over for the dash can make you fall off so many platforms in this game. Not to mention your melee attacks nudge you forward too and that's not always good.
It's cool battling through this again with more knowledge of David Wise thesedays. Cool to pick out some DKC'isms in some of these tracks.

Got up to stage 5 in Battletoads & Double Dragon. Save stated there for now.
It's pretty solid with more beat em' up action and simplicity as I always kind of suspected. And yeah I'm pretty sure I never played this one past the second level. They do go for a bit too long sometimes. Although the original Battletoads has become kind of infamous for its brutal sadism, this game makes me assume that back in the day there was probably a backlash against the original's difficulty. Thus this one is amusingly more forgiving in ways. Way more item orbs throughout the levels which frequently have 5,000 points, FULL health (no more hoping you eat the bugs or bash those flying bits to collect a health point or two), and even 1up's sprinkled throughout. Not sure if this one has finite continues or not though since I'm still save stating a lot. There's still some cheap deaths and weird moments that aren't explained at all, especially in stage 3... suddenly there's a few parts in the level where you need to jump and attack hoping you timed it right to throw out a hookshot, then you descend through areas like the original's stage 2. But then in one of these sections, you have to hold toward the wall to do a strong bulldozer ball attack that flings you to the other side of the screen, necessary to take out a turret in one spot to continue the level. Meanwhile you can't just swing over to the right in this part, so it took a bit to figure out. Some weird gimmicks like that here and there. Stage 4 is straight up Asteroids and I'm not sure why... but oh okay.
This should really illustrate how toned down it is in ways though... meet Turbo Tunnel for Babies:

Oh, yeah, the Turbo Tunnel is waaaaay easier. The whole game is, actually. The final fights can be rough, but it's nothing as unforgiving as the first game.

Yeah, I'm guessing you mean the final fight vs most things in Battletoads 1. Because the actual final boss fight in the first game is pretty anticlimactic and lame. The tower level itself was the true final boss.

XeogredI'm fairly certain I co-op beat Battletoads & Double Dragon on SNES with my brother long ago. The screens and videos you've been posting are ringing dusty old bells. I do remember enjoying the SNES game more than the NES game, insofar as actual gameplay is concerned.

Yeah, apparently that version is the easiest too. It looks different enough aesthetically, I might give it a look. Though I'll pass on the weird Genesis versions of these...
The music seems pretty awesome in the SNES version:
EDIT: It's lame how it seems in every version, despite Rash's avatar showing him with shades on, his sprite doesn't have them!
