Ah yes, always hear praises of that game in general.
It's interesting how the DS/3DS has so many SMT titles. I think the GBA only got some remakes of SMT1-2... looks like a fan translation of SMT1 GBA came out this year.

I think the GBA only got some remakes of SMT1-2 There's also a few Shin Megami Tensei - Devil Children games on GBA. But the "DemiKids" stuff is literally "SMT for kids" and probably wouldn't interest you (or me).

Just finished up...
Donkey Kong Land 2 - World 1 and one stage from world 2
Donkey Kong Land 3 - Three stages
Donkey Kong Country GBC - World 1 and two stages in world 2 (enough to see the mine cart level)
So these games released in this order and DKC GBC was a late 2000 release. That said, it must have been back to the drawing board for some of the engine/programming because it feels worse than the Land games in ways. Imagine of Donkey Kong himself feels 2,000 pounds heavier, lol. It's mighty impressive how good it looks and runs though and seems like quite a faithful port. I guess the game automatically saves after finishing a world. Candy Kong was just a minigame again, so resetting the game when I was done, started me back up at the start of world 2. The overworld, everything, looked like a near 1:1 of DKC SNES.
Land 2 seems like faithful demake of DKC2 as well. So this was probably amazing for kids at the time, maybe not feeling cheated by getting a bad port or something different like Land 1. But jump to 2021 and this fact makes DKL2 probably something to just skip nowadays. Just play the original SNES game. DKL3 actually had two different levels after the first, but I got the vibe it would also try to emulate the SNES original a bit more than being its own thing. Wasn't really feeling it. DKL2's map and saving system were like the SNES version again. It had the bonus coins and collectible stuff too that bloated out the sequels.
Cool stuff to look into, but yeah I'd maybe only recommend Donkey Kong Land 1 for being its own thing. While the GBC port of Country is worth a look on a technical level. It's just kind of funny the platform got a remixed DKC in DKL, then a more faithful port years later.
I think I'll still give DKC3 GBA a look today or soon. The different OST and extras sound cool.

XeogredWell you've intrigued me to play DKL for GB someday, so that's a win. The fact that it's not the same game is the selling point. What did you think of the MM games for GB, and the MMX games for GBC?

Xeogred Well you've intrigued me to play DKL for GB someday, so that's a win. The fact that it's not the same game is the selling point. What did you think of the MM games for GB, and the MMX games for GBC? The Mega Man Xtreme games are amazing. They both mix and match levels and ideas from the SNES trilogy. What I love about them though is how they feel like NES games. They seemed far smoother and visually appealing than the norm on the GB to me. DKL is good, but it's not MMXtreme good.
I've only played Mega Man V for the others, since it had a completely unique space theme and if I remember right, the Wily castle was like one massive stage and really different. Excellent stuff. I hear IV is good too, but it's hard for me to make the adjustment for the slow framerate and lacking screen space compared to the NES games I've played 100 times. Maybe someday...
I still don't think I've played another GB game that comes close to my top favorite though, which peaked early... just can't beat perfection.

Mega Man V (and Mega Man IV) are both worth a play for sure.
Yeah, hard to top Link's Awakening. But if y'all haven't played Donkey Kong '94, though, you really should. It's definitely in my top tier.

Heck yes, DK94' is amazing. I played a ton of that at my aunt's via the Super Gameboy. Not sure if I ever beat it. I'm pretty sure it actually introduced a lot of Mario's signature moves that were popularized in Mario 64 and whatnot. The quick turn around huge backflip, maybe it had the double/triple jump too? etc.
Maybe I'll hit this up again soon since I got in some weird GB/GBA mood all of a sudden haha.

It doesn't recycle the stages - much like Mega Man V, there's a ton of new material, and it feels more ambitious than the prior games. I think it's right there with MMV, so if you can get past the slowness, it's a fun time.
Yeah, DK'94 did have a ton of those moves. Backflip, handstand jump, and yeah, even a triple jump (first hop to handstand, second jump, then hit the third jump and you'd go flying. I used this in a few stages where I don't think it was necessarily intended, but that's what made it so fun. Speaking of fun, though, if you want to see someone break the game wide open...
