Being able to save anywhere or drop in and out of a modern game is something I usually appreciate a lot too. Dark Souls 2 has been incredibly relaxing to play on week nights in that way. So can you just like quit to the menu at any time, and it saves automatically or what? I always saved at bonfires in DeS and DS1, was I being dumb? ... Ahhh, yeah. Saves wherever you quit, no biggie.
To be fair, DS2 is a bit more plentiful of bonfires. I still usually leave off a session at the main hub or a bonfire. In general I like to be in a safe zone of sorts, or have a plan to orient myself for what's next when I pick it up again. But yeah, coziest most relaxing games ever, Dark Souls and FromSoftware games. Just quit out whenever you want.
