Here's something I've loved about gaming from the 7th gen and on a bit, for third person games set in fantastical/futuristic settings, it's always cool to see massive backdrops like this. You the player in some isolated location, it just gives off this awesome sense of wonder and awe for me. Chances are the backdrops might often be a flat texture, or you see the tree's are just flat objects sometimes. But it's been a cool illusion I've loved for awhile now and can be captured plenty in non-open world games too. It might even be better when that's the case, because these massive worlds in the background give off more allure and mystery that way. You can't "go there" but it makes you feel like you're stuck in some huge foreign land. All the modern FromSoftware games always do this well, some Dark Souls 2 examples above that I'm going through again now.
I remember FF13 wowed me a lot too with its cool HUGE looking locations. Yeah, the game is pretty linear for the most part, but dang it if looked amazing along the way.
This was sometimes pulled off during the 6th gen. Say, Ico, Shadow of the Colossus, God of War 1-2, etc, to an extent. But I think it was from the 7th gen and on when this element really started to wow me. Probably the huge increase in draw distance.
Chances are this means I probably need to visit Colorado and hike some mountains myself. Been in boring flat midwest suburbs most my life. So it's quite dull aesthetically. lol
Are there aspects of modern gaming you like or things the newer tech does that you appreciate?

kek I mean, honestly, I don't like modern gaming much buuuuut my favorite thing about it is having handhelds that are strong and competent and don't feel like backup travel systems. DS and PSP are my favorite handhelds of all time, outranking the retro ones. It was also cool to have a Nintendo vs. Sony battle for a couple of gens, as opposed to Nintendo just mercilessly cucking the WonderSwan, NGPC, Game Gear, etc. Oh and the Switch is incredible.

Guess it's a little humorous this thread died instantly. Well buddy this is a RETRO forum at heart. I appreciate the hell outta Red Dead Redemption 2. It's a technological marvel for starters. But RDR2 is four years old now, and most gamers would consider that retro by their standards!

Yeah I'm not surprised, it's funny.
That cracks me up with anime too. People who can't enjoy old media, gotta be some of the most boring people on Earth.

We talk about them as we're playing them, haha. I do appreciate the greater fidelity in backdrops and character models - it actually makes going back to some of the previous generations take a bit to adjust to at times. The draw distances really do help with impressive vistas, though, and I love how much immersion that can bring to the table. The world often looks inherently less "gamey", which is probably what Ex is appreciating with RDR2 right now.

The world often looks inherently less "gamey", which is probably what Ex is appreciating with RDR2 right now. The insane graphics are one of the things I love about RDR2 yes. RDR2 has by far the best realistic 3D graphics I've seen in any game IRL (as opposed to bullshots we always see online). So many tiny things, like when sunlight shines behind a person's ear it glows their ear red. Or when a cat walks near a campfire its eyes glow from the light. Rain drips completely differently off any given object, be it a roof, or leaves, or a horse's nose. The lighting model is phenomenal, the shadows are excellent, reflective surfaces are perfect. It's been years and years since I was blown away by a game's graphics, but RDR2 did it for me. And I'm playing on a PS4 Slim! Not even playing on a Pro over here. But let me be clear; RDR2's graphics are NOT the only reason I love the game.

Being able to save anywhere or drop in and out of a modern game is something I usually appreciate a lot too. Dark Souls 2 has been incredibly relaxing to play on week nights in that way.

Oh, I know you're not a graphics over gameplay guy, but great graphics can definitely elevate an already great game.

So can you just like quit to the menu at any time, and it saves automatically or what? I always saved at bonfires in DeS and DS1, was I being dumb? great graphics can definitely elevate an already great game No argument there man, that's absolutely true. But yeah, for me graphics are always icing, gameplay is cake.
