An Ys-y subject.

There are some similarities chiefly being the use of locked doors and the use of keys but in that case Resident Evil is also a Zelda game
Locked doors and keys are present in certain Mario games, but that doesn't make Mario like Resident Evil or Silent Hill. On the other hand, Resident Evil doesn't have medieval armor/weapons, spells/magic, fantasy-styled monsters, dragon bosses, D&D styled spike/fire booby traps, and dungeons with treasure chests. But Zelda and Dark Souls have that in common.
I also don’t consider Dark Souls to be like Zelda anyway
DS1 is not like Zelda insofar as push block puzzles and equipment item puzzles go. (Though there are some switch puzzles in DS IIRC.) It's most similar to Zelda in the ways I mentioned above, and in its exploratory style (recursive overland exploration coupled with scattered dungeons). There are some items you need in DS1 in order to progress through particular areas as well. And I don't just mean keys, but I'll abstain from spoiling anything.
Once you find the equipment you want for your build, finding new equipment is pointless in Dark Souls from what I found.
That's easy to think when you didn't make it past Blight Town. When you've reached Blight Town you've only made it a 1/3rd of the way through Dark Souls. (And that's not even counting the DLC.) Unless you are a rolling ninja who never gets hit, and doesn't mind chipping life off bosses for thirty minutes, you will increasingly need better equipment to finish the late game.
(Dark Souls) requires a different mentality to get the most of it than you would need from Zelda or Ys.
I agree.
The best version by far seems to be Xak I & 2 on the PCE-CD, so hopefully that gets translated eventually. Xak 3 is a PCE-CD exclusive
I & II on PCE is amazing, and only in Japanese. I can read enough of the language to get by. Xak III, fan-translated, is soooo good
Thanks for explaining that guys.
Well, looks like my best bet is Xak 1-3 on PCECD. Unfortunately the first two games are only in Japanese. I could counter that using the real-time Google Translation overlay technique I figured out earlier this year. Hopefully next year I'll carve out a routine gaming schedule to really get back into some hardcore retro gaming. My free time lately has been eaten up with all manner of real life stuff.
