the PC-98 is that it's almost all eroge there are some genuinely good ones out there, some good enough that they still appealed with their 18+ content removedI agree so hard. I've beaten some PC-98 eroge games that had legitimately good gameplay*, despite having a lewd factor. To me it is childishly dismissive when people ignore games, simply because oh no the game's a tad smutty. I cannot comprehend having such a prudish mindset. (Okay sure if you're a literal nun don't play PC-98, fair enough.) I for one have a fully functioning, testosterone fueled libido, and as such appreciate quality retro T&A. I also appreciate modern ecchi games. Praise upon Japan for their gifts of glorious pixel laden eye candy.
*A few examples I've enjoyed for the gameplay (as well as the eye candy): Play if you enjoy Assault Suits Valken. Play if you enjoy Castlevania. Play if you enjoy shmups.

Dragon Knight III was released as Knights of Xentar on DOS back in the '90s, and it's a genuinely good RPG, even though there's eroge, so I can vouch for that as well.

I know about Knights of Xentar myself, I remember downloading it on some abandonware site. Didn't stick with it, though.

In my examples, I was specifically talking about PC-98 games. In the '90s I had a DOS demo for Knights of Xentar, I finished the demo at least.

I know about Knights of Xentar myself, I remember downloading it on some abandonware site. Didn't stick with it, though. It has this semi-automated battle system that can be off-putting at first. Once you get magic, though, and more characters, the battles become more involving as you have to cast the spells manually and manage everybody's HP. You can also (and should also) set the battle speed very high, IIRC. I know I didn't get into it right away, but I ended up liking it quite a bit at the time. The proof that the Dragon Knight series is solid is that there are console ports of some of the games that completely remove the sexual content, as dunpeal2064 alluded to. Ex Dragon Knight 3 / Knights of Xentar is a PC-98 game! The DOS port was created specifically for the North American market. I think most of Megatech's games were originally PC-98 releases.

Makes sense, since the PC-98 was an x86 machine.

toei I just remembered another PC-98 ecchi game that I enjoyed for the gameplay too: Ningyō Tsukai 2 (1996) Very good looking, competent fighter.

Is that the one that came out over here as Metal & Lace?
EDIT: Oh, wait, that's the sequel.

Like Sarge, I found those games through abandonware sites over a decade ago. Aside from Cobra Mission (which I dropped because of the constant random encounters while you're trying to investigate), Knights of Xentar and Metal & Lace, there was another RPG titled Mad Paradox. I finished it and it was nothing special IIRC (though I don't think it was terrible or anything), but I always liked the title. I don't know for Cobra Mission, but in the case of Knights of Xentar and Metal & Lace, they have that distinct PC-98 look. That use of dithering. Y'all know Zeliard was a PC-88 game, right? Wibarm too. I don't believe Japan had a market for DOS games at the time, so any Japanese game brought over to American PCs in the late '80s/early '90s (and there aren't many, to my knowledge) was going to have to be ported from a Japanese computer to DOS. IIRC it was with Windows 95 that Japan began using American standards with computers. I think it had to do with improvements in terms of how it handled Japanese fonts and text. From that point it seemed all that was left was (mostly eroge) doujinshi and Falcom.

Guess it fits here, but I actually have all four Megatech releases. All 4 games are PC-98 ports, with a lot of changes done by Megatech, making even Working Designs look modest in their changes. Knights of Xentar 3 particularly rules because the CD version has a full dub done by Megatech and their friends. Its awful in the best way.
