Ha, you probably are thinking of Knights of Xentar. I love that game! Note that it got a U.S. DOS release, translated to English. I'd recommend going that route. Seconded. Knights of Xentar is a badass RPG with great characterization, eroge or not. The PC-98 was definitely more of a platform for RPGs, that much is true. I can't recommend the Farland Story games, though. They're absolutely the easiest SRPGs in existence, making them a huge drag. I know the series got better at some point, because Farland Symphony (on the regular PC) was really good. There's a fan translation for it, it's worth tracking down.

If memory serves, there was a censored version that came out over here, so if it's that good, maybe I should give it a shot that way.

It's a funny game, too. The automated battle seem boring at first, but it gets a lot better once you get magic cause control the spells.

My favorite Megatech releases were Metal & Lace: Battle of the Robo Babes (fighter) and Power Dolls (mecha strategy). Screenshots: Metal & Lace Power Dolls I had both of those in the '90s. Never beat them though. I should someday.

It's like the developers knew most JRPGs just required A-button-mashing so they decided to take a shortcut and make it automated. The battle system in the original game (Dragon Knight III) is more traditional and not as good. Just a heads up to anyone apprehensive, Knights of Xentar is eroge and not "full-blown" hentai. I'm not gonna "defend" its content - it's still crass and misogynistic in parts - thought it ultimately "could be worse" and is really a fun and well-designed game overall.

You should try Magna Braban on the Super Famicom, it also has an automated battle system, though with a top down view. You can just interrupt the flow of battle to give your party members general or individual orders. It's also got some funny moments, though it's more traditional (and not eroge, obviously, being a SFC game). It's a got a solid fan translation.

^ Played it for a bit, do not own it. Hope to get it soon, it's on my wishlist along with a buncha other Super Famicom JRPGs.

I should probably look at importing that while I'm on my SFC kick. Hopefully it's a cheap one.
EDIT: $30. Not terrible, sure, but still pricier compared to some of the stuff I've been picking up.

I think sometime over the next several years I'm gonna try to complete select classic JRPGs (well, APRGs) as they originally existed. Mainly,
Ys I, II, III on PC-88. Xak I, II, and Fray on MSX2, Xak III on PC-98, Tower of Gazzel on MSX2 (okay that one actually didn't receive any console ports). Lagoon on X68000 Popful Mail on PC-88 Some others I've probably forgotten
There are also some computer exclusive RPGs that look tasty, like the Amaranth and Rune Worth games.

Also, you convinced me to give PCECD Xak III a go for the current Club Retro. I likely won't get to it until June, but I will play it.
