Good games or nah?
Kinda interested in these. I like spooky settings, Japanese horror, horror VNs, and "Haunted House" on the Atari 2600.
I enjoy the game D. I do not like Resident Evil or Silent Hill.
Most old horror games are too expensive. These look kinda affordable..... for now.
Should I take the plunge???

I have the following experience with this franchise: I beat Fatal Frame: Special Edition on Xbox. I beat Spirit Camera: The Cursed Memoir (this is FF related game) on 3DS. I put a few hours into Fatal Frame II: Crimson Butterfly - Director's Cut on Xbox. Based on my experiences with the FF franchise, I think they are above average and unique games. These are far creepier than Resident Evil or Silent Hill in my experience. Primarily because you have to use a camera to "kill" ghosts. Meaning you must face the ghosts in a first person view when doing so, making them more menacing than the third person views of RE and SH. Also you don't have guns or blade weapons, just a magic camera. (The exploration is done in third person viewpoint though.) There are puzzles to solve as well. The environs tend to be dark and menacing and well crafted. Graphics are certainly nice overall. In the world of survival horror the Fatal Frame games remain unique in their approach. Sometimes I like to be a skirt wearing teenage girl chasing ghosts in a haunted house taking pics for Instagram.

First two games are mad classics. Would only compare them lightly to RE1 with the Spencer Mansion in a way. Very isolated settings with a lot of intricate details in them. The first game takes place in a claustrophobic small Japanese temple home. Lots of puzzles and some backtracking can get a little confusing, but it's awesome. The atmosphere is super heavy but it's not just the spooky jump scares and stuff, you eventually learn about why this ghost is crying for "MY EYES" and how people die, detailed descriptions of nasty rituals, etc. As a teen, these games got in my head and kept me up at night. Fast forward to nowadays... I don't find ghost/supernatural stuff as compelling or scary, but that's subjective.
The second game is a masterpiece. I love a bunch of RE and SH personally and FF2 is easily in those same conversations. It's bigger and just scarier/better all around. I think these games got another print run on the PS2 like when some SMT games did as well? 2010's or so. I'm not sure, but that must have been when I scooped them up and this was actually the first time I beat 2 personally. My friends and I played it back in the day but got stuck. If you don't gel with the first game because of its location or design, still give 2 a shot.
Sadly fell off 3. It's awkwardly paced like Silent Hill 4, except 100x less intriguing and seemed boring from what I played. You go into "dream" sequences or something for the traditional level portions... then wake back up at the girls apartment or something and have to interact with a bunch of stuff there, find what's new or different, talk to your friend. I didn't like the structure of the game much. You go in and out of these two different modes frequently.
From there, 4-5 almost look more like meme material with the lingerie and goofy outfits. I'm not complaining... but maybe 3 soured the series, 2 was the peak, or the latest ones just aren't quite as good? I'm glad they're getting remasters, I want to check them out sometime. But I just feel like the series hasn't been as big of a deal since the PS2 era, perhaps I just have some blinders on though.
But yeah, first two rule. I can backup what Ex said above. If you don't like RE/SH and some other survival horror, Fatal Frame still kind of does its own thing so give it a shot.
Story time, I originally played and beat the first game with a group of friends. I'd always play the game. Someone would read the text with his weird voices, then two others would all help out with the puzzles and stuff. Fast forward a bit and I had a birthday party when Fatal Frame was still the hot stuff. Maybe we were playing 2 then. But we were in my basement playing the game and it we had a sliding glass door to the backyard. My dad dressed up as some freak clown thing and came banging on the door behind us scaring the crap out of all of us. lol

Cool beans. You planning to hit it up right away? Did you go PS2 or Xbox? PS2. Hope to play it later in the year. Is there any reason for me to get the Xbox version? Same goes for the sequel. Any reason to get both variants? I actually already own that one, on Xbox.

Maybe some other extras. I loved 2 so much I double dipped to check out the Xbox version someday. Interesting. Maybe I should have double dipped for 1 too haha... but I think the original is fine for me there. Overall probably not a huge deal. But the Xbox versions sound like the best overall.

Is there any reason for me to get the Xbox version? Same goes for the sequel. Any reason to get both variants? I actually already own that one, on Xbox. The Xbox versions have extras, that's why I played them. FF1 Xbox extras: Graphical upgrades, new ghosts to fight, a redesigned interface for the camera, bonus costumes for Miku, and a new "Fatal" difficulty mode. Completing the game on "Fatal" difficulty unlocks an art gallery. FF2 Xbox extras: Enhanced graphics with better lighting effects, a Dolby Digital audio option, the inclusion of a first person view mode and more costumes as well. Edit: Ninja'd by Xeogred, but yeah.
