Seems like I've seen people on HRG in general beating shorter games these days. Maybe it's just a selective bias in my mind though. So yeah a poll to confirm. Do you find yourself gravitating to shorter games these days, or do you still love some big ol' honker RPGs? (Or whatever other genres can be 30+ hours long.) If you are digging shorter games nowadays why so?

The last time I beat a game that was 30+ hours long was RDR2 back in February. I'm at almost 25 hours in Risen presently, I think it's safe to say I'll hit 30+ with it.

Right now Phantasy Star is my longest retro game as of 2023, at 10h5m. The breezy Sega Ages version, so it might not totally count to some.
2022: Shin Megami Tensei: Digital Devil Saga - 31h Shin Megami Tensei: Digital Devil Saga 2 - 36h
I burned through all the King's Field / Shadow Tower games in the last two years, but none of them exceeded 30 hours. KF4 was the closest at ~25 hours.
SMT3 and DQ8 were some big monsters for me recently.
I never try to fret the length of a game, but alas yeah I can only get a few of these in a year. I don't think my habits have changed much with my approach to things.
If I do hit up Phantasy Star II this year, it looks like it's in the ballpark according to HLTB. Beyond that though off the top of my head, I'm not sure what other "long" retro games come to mind for what I have on deck. But I still have a slew of PS2 JRPG's on my shelf to check out.

It seems I would go through a little 6 hour jaunt in Half Life Opposing Force or Sin, only to later spend dozens of hours on Final Fantasy VII or Warcraft II.

Last year for me. Probably Katana Kami: A Way of the Samurai Story. Steam has me at 55 hours.

when is the last 30+ hour classic game you played before Risen? The last 30+ hour long, 10+ year old game I beat was Dragon Age: Origins (2009) back in August 2022. I put 41 hours into DA:O. I'm already over 30 hours in Risen (2009) as of last night's play session.

Looking at the list, the last two were Dark Souls Remastered and Star Wars: Jedi - Fallen Order. Fallen Order is on the borderline - don't actually know how long, but I estimated at about 30 hours. DS was definitely over at 55 hours.
I used to chew through 30+ (or even 50-hour games), but definitely not as much anymore. Although there will be another added to the list very shortly when I get my hands on Tears of the Kingdom.

So is this a change or tastes, or perhaps some of us feel we've tackled a lot of the longer old games that interested us?

I think it's an age thing. My patience isn't what it used to be, and it doesn't help that many times, I feel like I've already experienced some of the best RPGs in the genre, and many newer ones ring hollow. It probably doesn't help that I already burned through many of the big RPGs of the PSX/PS2 era, where the playtimes were routinely over 30 hours, and of course many of the 16-bit era RPGs ended up under the 30-hour mark (and I've beaten a ton of those, too).
I also realized this was more aimed at longer old games, not modern ones, although Dark Souls just qualifies.
Before that, it looks like 2020 was the last time I burned more than 30 hours on retro games - Wild ARMs: Alter Code F, Deus Ex, and Tales of Graces f.

Ages ago. And it was probably just a long ass visual novel.
I had two years (2011, 2012) of my life where I was really able to nestle into some nice meaty games. That's when I played through Skies of Arcadia, Symphonia, and those other "big" RPGs.

Fallen Order is on the borderline - don't actually know how long According to HLTB; if you did everything in the game there is to do, then you could have hit 30 hours. Poor DQ11. Ages ago. And it was probably just a long ass visual novel. I've been surprised at how long some of those VNs are. Like Muv-Luv Alternative looks good initially but then it's ~50 hours of reading. So is this a change or tastes, or perhaps some of us feel we've tackled a lot of the longer old games that interested us? There are still many 30+ hour games I'm interested in. But it takes me a while to beat long games due to life responsibilities/obligations and other hobbies. I tend to only allocate 1-2 hours into video gaming a day, and I don't play every day, usually five or six days a week. Sometimes if I'm really into a game, I can do 3 hours in a day, but I burn out quickly after 3 hours. If I've done a lot of physical activity in a day, or didn't get much sleep, I tend to not have the energy for gaming at all that day. That's because I only game late at night, usually 11PM-1AM is my window. It's that late because I get all my other responsibilities/goals/interests done first with video games being the end reward just before ZZZzzzz. Of course when I was a bachelor living alone with barely any wife/house/yard/pet responsibilities I beat long games much more often, but that was a long time ago.
