BoFIV is so good. I greatly prefer it to BoFIII, which seems to be everyone's favorite.

XeogredI actually thought as a prequel Crisis Core had really good writing. It also has one of the best, if not THE best endings in a JRPG that I've ever seen. It's a better written game than FF7 was (yes I beat FF7, not FF7R though). The only FF games I truly loved, as in 9/10 or better, have been FF6 and FF12. They have some commonalities - heavy on world exploration and a more somber/mature tone, for example. I've beaten BoF1 and BoF3. I very much enjoyed BoF1 though it seems to get shit on a lot. BoF3 I thought had great graphics and an amazing OST, but it had terrible game and scenario design. I've not played BoF4 yet. I do intend to someday, as you so often mention its greatness. Or at least, assumed greatness. ;p

Ahhhh BoF3, yeah I wasn't a fan. I remember reading that it takes like a dozen hours to get to where Ryu isn't a chibi kid anymore and grows up. I'm not sure if I made it that far, probably not if I don't remember it. It is one I should maybe give another look though. But going backwards from BoF4 first was not ideal. I sampled BoF1-2, I just remember weird story arcs about like giant evil frogs and stuff. They seemed kind of lame. lol, but I haven't really given them a fair shot perhaps.

I thought BoF2 was lame and I was playing the official localization which is notoriously awful. For my tastes BoF1 was much better. IIRC Square worked with Capcom on BoF1, but BoF2 was all Capcom. That could explain some things if that's accurate.

I like Breath of Fire II, but it felt overindulgent. Too long and that "town-building" stuff does nothing for me. First one was more straightforward and chill. III and IV are alright.
I'm of the opinion that V sucks ass. Artsy fartsy experimental crap that does nothing right.
Oh and I'm one of those weirdos that hopped on a VPN to try Breath of Fire 6. Also awful. I can count on one hand the number of games I've straight up uninstalled. That was one.
As for replaying stuff, I love it. My memory is kind of ass and everything feels fresh after only a few years. Of course I have lotsa platformers that are annual replays too.

I'm a big fan of Breath of Fire 2 and 3. 2 is a top 5 SNES RPG to me, 3 is probably the same for PSX, though it's not quite as good. 4 kind of sucks. 1 was decent, but the dragon forms really break the late game. Never tried 5, it just sounded weird in a way that didn't appeal to me at all.
I did have a good time with FF8, yeah, precisely because it was languid. I called it a RPG vacation. I remember one really crappy sewer dungeon and the later discs were probably weaker because it's a FF tradition, but I liked it.
I also dropped Legend of Dragoon after finishing the first disc. At the time I thought I was just taking a quick break, but I never got back to it. I used to want to, but at this point I don't care.

Crazy how tastes differ even with a single series. BoFII is my other favorite, even if the localization is not ideal. I also like the original a lot, even if it's the closest to "generic" RPG in the series. It's still executed extremely well.
I bounced off of BoFV, just too different for me, and the idea of getting stuck and having to restart the game (in the process getting more story) was just weird. They'd revisit the idea to much better effect with Dead Rising (at least from what everyone says, I've never played it).

Ever since I finished Rent A Hero No. 1, I've been thinking I should replay the Genesis game. Part of it is that I want to confirm how much of the Dreamcast game's content was remade and how much was new, because based on my memories, it feels like it's almost more of a sequel. It starts out the same way, but then a ton of the missions (and as such, the story) are different, with both versions having numerous unique missions. The city is different - there were more areas in the first game, but the areas are much more developed on the DC, there are large locations that didn't exist, there major supporting characters that didn't exist... I also wonder whether I might appreciate it more now, cause No. 1 was my favorite game in a while.
I also kind of regret playing the Dreamcast version of Skies of Arcadia instead of the Gamecube's - the reduced encounter rate, the wanted fugitive quests (I love that kind of stuff), the additional backstory, it just sounds better. And I didn't even get into Arcadia, to my disappointment. It wasn't bad, but it didn't move me. Maybe a replay would change that.
I'd maybe even replay Shenmue, at least the first game. My problem is I suck at QTEs. Gives me a thread idea, actually.

It IS better. Not trying to rub salt in the wound, but the GameCube version is definitively better (please don't give me that "the DC has better music" crap you won't notice the difference in reality). I absolutely LOVED the GC version of SoA:L. To the point I did everything you could do in that JRPG. And there is a lot of additional content added (Piastol is so badass) plus streamlining of some of the bullshit stuff, and reduced encounter rates. I would easily put Skies of Arcadia: Legends in the top 10 JRPGs I've personally beaten in the past decade. It was a solid 9/10 for me. EXCELLENT JRPG from top to bottom.
