Just a thread idea that popped into my head - what games have made you laugh? And what kind of comedy makes you laugh in games?
I'm a bit at a loss here because 'I know it's happened several times, yet I can't think of anything right now. I'll have to look at my lists of games I beat and stuff to job my memory before I can contribute.

Off the top of my head I think humor translates a little better in like the 6th gen in up. The Yakuza series definitely comes to mind, crazy hilarious writing, gag side quests, weird characters.
I think the quirky Japanese humor in general works for me. Capcom/Platinum games come to mind, Dante in Devil May Cry or Leon in Resident Evil cracking jokes despite the situations they're in. Or when Metal Gear Solid goes further breaking the 4th wall. Some might think it's immersion ruining to put some goofy stuff in otherwise super serious stories, but I think I kind of appreciate the personality and it makes me like those games even more. But if the humor seems forced or crosses some line, maybe not so much.
On the SNES/Genesis I did kind of like stuff in the vein of Earthworm Jim or Boogerman. That weird 90's Ren & Stimpy gross kid humor or subtle adult jokes in between.

Right, I think it's more delicate with a movie for example, because it's something you watch in one sitting. Games are longer and can more easily vary moods, so I don't think humor is typically a problem unless you put jokes in the worst possible moment (if you want to create a scary atmosphere for a particular scene, for example). Of course, some games are still better without it - I can't remember any gags in Silent Hill 1 or 2 outside of the weird optional endings that require replays and specific knowledge to attain, and it doesn't need any. You did refresh my memory some - Yakuza 1 & 2 had some funny parts. Rent-A-Hero on the Dreamcast made me laugh out loud 2-3 times and amused me a few times. Some 16-bit RPGs have a few funny moments - Lufia 2 comes to mind, Gunman's Proof, Magna Braban. Knights of Xentar was pretty funny. Albert Odyssey on the Saturn was actually funny - probably the only time Working Designs' comedy really landed consistently for me.

EarthBound makes me lol. Such a brilliant script and localization.
The second gen as a whole, especially Atari, is "funny" in a very distinct American early-80s fashion. So many ridiculous games, concepts, and aesthetics. I still can't get over the fact that there was a tank combat game unironically called Tanks But No Tanks.

what games have made you laugh? In over forty years of playing video games, I'm sure I've laughed loads of times. Certainly can't remember every game. I'll just post the first five that initially come to mind: When I was a kid the Sierra On-Line, Inc. and LucasArts adventure games made me laugh. Stuff like Leisure Suit Larry and The Secret of Monkey Island for example. Many of their adventure games were legitimately funny back in ye day. The few Yakuza games I've played thus far have made me laugh often. Can't ridiculously punch a tiger in the face and not laugh. The original No One Lives Forever's deadpan cutscenes had me laughing.
The Fallout games, with their acid black humor, often made me laugh. That's the first five, I'm sure many more games made me lul that I'm forgetting. Japanese games especially often have quirky humor. Yeah I just remembered another one; God Hand! That one was hilarious.
I appreciate absurdity (like Tim & Eric and Monty Python) and sardonicism (like George Carlin and Louis CK) most. Never been a fan of gross out humor, even as a kid that was too lowbrow for me. The funniest TV show to me ever was Check It Out! with Dr. Steve Brule which aired 2010-2016. That's why I post awkward Steve Brule memes so often. Can't let the world forget the genius.

You have to hand it to them, that game was charming.

You have to hand it to them, that game was charming. It's the best Monolith Productions game I've played.* *Out of all these:Aliens Versus Predator 2 (OK-ish) Blood (not as good as DOOM or Heretic or Hexen or Duke Nukem 3D) Blood II: The Chosen (bleh) Condemned: Criminal Origins (I beat this, it's good) F.E.A.R. (decent gunplay, everything else is monotonous) Gorky 17 (seemed OK, didn't play much) No One Lives Forever 2: A Spy in H.A.R.M.'s Way (awful sequel) Shogo: Mobile Armor Division (I beat this, it's terrible) The Operative: No One Lives Forever (I beat this, it's great) The bolded stuff I recommend playing.
