I was thrift shopping with my Mom and sister. We stopped at a Goodwill. Inside the store, I kept finding NES systems. One of them had a portable LCD screen snapped onto the console. Another NES had a 4 player adapter snapped onto the console as well. They were $35 each. I spied a model one Sega Genesis in the corner, pulled it out, and realized it had a model 1 Sega CD and Sega 32X attached to it. It was priced at $8. Next I found a Lego set depicting a prehistoric giant crocodile attacking some Lego dudes. I don’t remember what it cost, but I thought it looked cool so I put it in my shopping cart. Finally my sister brought my attention to a shelf within the store covered entirely in complete in the box Sega Genesis games. I looked more closely and realized the cover artwork for the cases had been photocopied or something. They were blurry and the colors were washed out. But they appeared to contain actual Sega Genesis cartridges. There were also old Nintendo Power magazines on the shelf. One of them featured the logo for ‘WING COMMANDER’ and had a woman in a futuristic uniform facing the viewer with determined look. There was a sign that read, “Nintendo Power magazines vary in price from $8 to $80.” This made me concerned that they would just research the value of the Genesis games on eBay. But I proceeded to check them all for titles that interested me anyway. I felt self-conscious because I was going to take a long time while my Mom and sister were trapped in the store with me.

anayo: I've had that feeling while my parents/brother had to wait on me in real life, many times.

Lulz.

I remember back in the '90s, someone made a BBS computer virus that would create endless folders within folders on your hard drive, until it eventually corrupted the master boot record. Back then that meant you'd have to format the entire hard drive to make it usable again.

In 2009 I had my Intel Core Duo with Windows XP set up such that the C: drive was a little 40 GB hard drive and all my games and useful files resided on much a larger, non-C hard drive, because I would routinely end up with adware and spyware which called for me to nuke the 40 GB hard drive and reinstall XP every six months or so. Apparently the viruses weren't smart enough to spread to the larger drive.

I dreamed I was replaying a game I had once played as a child. I had completely forgotten about it until then, and somehow, in all my times playing classic games, I had never run into it again. It was a Sega Genesis action RPG with an isometric view, telling the story of a young man on an adventure with a princess. The young man knew nothing of other humans, and though he was comically naive as a result, he was also clever, and was doing his best to charm the princess. The game was largely about their banter, and I don't recall encountering any NPC. It all seemed to take place in one large location, possibly an abandoned castle, partly overtaken by nature. Lots of greens in the color palette. Like Landstalker, I think it featured some platforming, but it wasn't heavy on puzzles. Though Yuzo Koshiro wasn't the original composer, he had arranged the soundtrack, and it definitely sounded like his style. I woke up with a song from Streets of Rage 1 in my head, so it's possible that that's what was actually playing in my dream. And because dreams are incoherent, sometimes it was actually a movie I was watching, a forgotten '90s comedy I had liked as a kid, with the same setting and characters.
I was also vaguely aware that this feeling of finally rediscovering this long-forgotten thing was familiar; I think it's something I've often dreamed about in one form or another, though I never remember the details.

To be honest, at first I thought about the The Legend of Zelda cartoon, complete with an "excuuuuuuuse me, princess!"

I know what you mean. My dreams seem to increasingly feature magical feelings about the past.
