I've beaten it, and I remember Ex and toei also beating it. I think we were all in agreement that it's pretty bad.

Also have to say the recent translated JoJo RPG looks kind of weird. Gameplay wise it doesn't look very fun at all, but I guess to really capture the visuals of the manga at the time, that format may have worked for what they were going for. Kind of wild it took until 2012 for it to get an awesome anime adaptation (that SNES game is based off part 3 Stardust Crusaders, still the peak of JoJo in my book).

Yep, it's a 5/10 if you're nice. 4/10 if you're Ex. (IIRC, haha) If you want a decent Telenet action side-scroller, Valis 2 PCE-CD is nice. You beat that SNES Iria game? I can't remember. I thought it was pretty cool. I tried that JoJo game, haha, it straight up sucks. Literally no reason to play that instead of just watching the '90s OVA series or whatever. It's almost all story, abridged and presented really badly. EDIT: Xeogred If you're looking for a good fan-translated action game, Dahna: Megami Tanjou on the Genesis is nice. Be aware that the controls are a little odd and require some adaptation at first. But it's basically a female Rastan by some of the same team, with nice gritty visuals. I'd recommend it to Ex and Sarge too. About the controls, I wrote this at the time (on HG101): "The basic layout is standard enough for a side-scroller: there’s a button for attacking, one for jumping, and one for using magic. There’s an upward stab, and two types of air attacks. Holding up while jumping takes you (much) higher and further, while pressing down crouches. Here it gets a bit unusual, as just a press of the button will leave you in a crouch until you get back up manually, while pressing down again will have you crawling on the ground, a move that has no use at any point in the game. The attack button works as if on turbo, meaning that you will attack continuously as long as you hold it. This idea was first explored in Rastan‘s underwhelming sequel, Nastar Warrior, however Dahna uses a three-hit combo, with a first slash describing a vertical arc from above her head towards the ground followed by two horizontal strikes aimed at the enemy’s midsection. As that first attack can hit enemies coming at you from above, it’s often preferable to go with single vertical slashes than the full sequence, which requires that you get used to a certain timing rather than just mash the button. Most bizarre, though, is that the same turbo applies to jumps as well; forget to let go of the buttons after a particularly tense leap and you will automatically jump forward again, quite often to your death. There is no changing directions in mid-air; the only control you have is over how far up and ahead you go. There is a certain stiffness to the movements, where every action needs to be calculated and executed separately for maximum efficiency; to succeed in this game, you may have to get rid of old gaming habits and learn to consciously think, however briefly, about each of your moves."

Guess the PCE-CD counts as 4th gen? Could be an interesting one to look into.
I think what excited me about that Psycho Dream game is that it looked a little like Run Saber, Shinobi, Rolling Thunder, etc. Something about that kind of look and feel right now seems appealing. Which Valis does kind of fit.
Nah I never did play the Iria game actually.

Yeah, Psycho Dream looked cool to me too. Same as Edo no Kiba. But Telenet was known for really rushing developments at that point in their history and it's very obvious with those two. Extremely unpolished to the point of killing the fun, and Edo flat out doesn't feel like a complete game.
PCE and PCE-CD is a chameleon, who knows what gen it is. But it competed with the Genesis and SNES longer than the NES and Master System.

Has anyone here played Psycho Dream? Close... I put some time in this one when the English translation originally dropped. I thought the graphics were great, and I liked the basic premise of it. But the difficulty balancing is terrible, it's a sadistic slog. I gave up on it.

Glad to see that considering we didn't get an Un-Worked Designs patch for that one.

Here are some Mega Drive and Super Famicom games, that have English fan translations, that I'm considering playing:
Advanced Busterhawk Gleylancer Ball Bullet Gun Battle Golfer Yui Fushigi no Umi no Nadia Ganpuru: Gunman's Proof Hamelin no Violin Hiki Ihatovo Monogatari Jutei Senki Kaiszou Choujin Shubibinman Zero Mickey no Tokyo Disneyland Daibouken Mickey to Donal - Magical Adventure 3 Nangoku Shounen Papuwa-kun Super Fantasy Zone Treasure Conflix Twinbee - Rainbow Bell Adventure Undead Line
I don't have time to beat all of these within two months, but I could certainly take out some of them. Anyone want to chime in on which of these are great or not great? Has anyone besides me ever played Ball Bullet Gun? I sampled it long, long ago when its English fan translation originally released, don't remember much about it.

Advanced Busterhawk Gleylancer - I know I've tried this, more than once, but I always forget what it's like. Very standard shmup at first glance, but supposedly it's really good, so maybe it's like Gate of Thunder in that sense.
Battle Golfer Yui - This seemed well-made and I was curious about the story mode, but I'm helpless at it. I literally struggled to win one match. I have almost no golf game (or golf) experience, so maybe you can do better. But Backstreet Billiards' RPG mode wasn't hard even without relevant experience, so IDK.
Fushigi no Umi no Nadia - I played this one for a while way back when, this is an adventure game where you move around like a RPG. It was alright but I got stuck somewhere. Not nearly as good as Private Eyedol.
Ganpuru: Gunman's Proof - This is cool. Basically Zelda with guns, cowboys, aliens and a sense of humor. I'd say its main flaw is that it's NES Zelda and not SNES Zelda.
Hamelin no Violin Hiki - Decent platformer with side-scroller towns between levels.
Treasure Conflix - I reviewed it when the translation came out a year ago, I liked it. It's a mix between a RPG and a treasure-hunting game, with a bit of real-time fighting, and can be beaten in a few hours. I'd say it's the best Square Satellaview game.
Undead Line - Genesis or X68000? They're very different in terms of level design etc. Either way, I like this style of shmup a lot - it's like Elemental Master - but this is crazy brutal. You really have to chart a path through the whole game. EDIT - Nevermind, you said Mega Drive. Anyway, it could be interesting to look into the other version, it's also translated.
