Ex: Advanced Busterhawk Gleylancer - Haven't played this much, just know it by its recent Western release and the absolute banger soundtrack. Ganpuru: Gunman's Proof - Very fun little ARPG, as long as you don't go in expecting A Link to the Past. It's much more arcade-like, and has a sense of humor close to EarthBound. Hamelin no Violin Hiki - Really fun little puzzle-platformer. Pretty much all your progression is tied to using (abusing?) your tag-along. Ihatovo Monogatari - I haven't played this one past booting it up for a few minutes, but it's apparently more of a narrative adventure game than anything. I'm thinking perhaps like To the Moon on PC. I want to give this one a look for sure. Kaiszou Choujin Shubibinman Zero - I think Xeogred just finished this one recently and enjoyed it. Mickey to Donal - Magical Adventure 3 - If you like the other two Magical Quest games, you'll enjoy this one. I recommend getting the FastROM hack for it as well to avoid the slowdown. Nangoku Shounen Papuwa-kun - Another one I've briefly played, and would like to devote some time to.

I just remembered the 4th gen also includes Game Boy and Game Gear. I might be hitting up some 8-bit portable stuff this month, and do the console stuff next month. Time to see what's fan translated on GB and GG that I've not played yet.

I finished Phantasy Star Adventure for the Game Gear. Overall, a neat visual adventure that doesn't overstay its welcome, though it's so short and sparse I cannot believe it was likely sold as a full-priced game.

Chema Most of those menu-based adventure games from that era were very short. Snatcher and Policenauts are actually outliers. I've played a few on the NES or Famicom Disk System that are about an hour and a half long. Phantasy Star Adventure is cool, but yeah, it's basically a short story in adventure game form. The closest thing to it is probably The Story of Mio (aka Hoshi wo Sagashite) on the Master System, which I thought was nice too. There's also the 8 Phantasy Star 2 text adventure, which are similar but with far fewer graphics. They also have the handful of dice-based fights per episode.

Phantasy Star Gaiden is longer, but unfortunately it's not good at all. It's almost all level grinding.

toei I did not know most Japanese adventure games were that short, but it makes sense. Ex I agree it's great to have more classic Phantasy Star. In fact, I'm thinking of playing the fan translation of Phantasy Star III and see if I can finish the game this time.

The shorter the better for me right now perhaps haha, never knew about Phantasy Star Adventure until now. If the story/lore is cool maybe I should give it a look.
