I'm going to go ahead and get this theme up, because I may not have a ton of time outside of this weekend next week! While I was tempted to do both swords and guns combined, it feels like doing both of those at once captures a massive portion of gaming, so I'm going to stick with one. And if y'all want swords instead, I can do that.
Anyway, for now, we're gonna take gunplay, because quite honestly it feels like the 7th generation was awash with many a great shooter. Of course, as per usual you don't have to choose a 7th gen shooter, anything with firearms is fair game. I know several of y'all lit it up on the shooter front in this gen, so suggestions are very welcome! As for past gens, I'll never stop recommending my favorite PC triumvirate of Dark Forces, DOOM, and Descent.

7th gen and guns works for me, that means I can roll Metroid Prime 3 up in here.
7th gen had loads of great 3rd and 1st person shooters, I can rec all day. Even for DS and PSP.

Been feeling the itch for some shooters after some heavy RPG's this year so far for me, haha.
Maybe I'll give some of the Call of Juarez games a look, I have some of those on Steam.

My take on the first two This is by far the best 7th gen cowboy/outlaw game: No other similarly themed 7th gen games in that aesthetic even come close. The only detriment I hold against RDR1, is you can't play it in first person, it's third person only. RDR2 fixed that.

Had no idea those Juarez games had roots in Techland, whom made Dying Light which I really enjoyed (second game sounded a little hit or miss, so it hasn't been a huge priority to me). Cool to know. As noted in your two reviews here, seems like they got better and better by the game. So if the first one doesn't do much for me maybe I'll just jump around to the next one.

There are two more Call of Juarez games I've got, but haven't played yet: Call of Juarez: The Cartel (I've got this one on 360) Call of Juarez: Gunslinger (I've got this one on Switch) I doubt they are better than Call of Juarez: Bound in Blood. If you only play one game in this series, it should be that one. - Started co-op'ing Lost Planet 2 tonight with my wife. It fits this theme, so here we go. So far it's marginally better than the first Lost Planet. You get ragdolled around a lot less, at least. Unfortunately, this is an older MT Framework game. Which is fine for single player, but that engine's co-op splitscreen mode is like this: Instead of having a full split-screen, you get those mini-screens with lots of wasted screen space. Even on a 65" HDTV it's still annoyingly small. But my wife and I beat other Capcom 7th gen MT Framework games like this, so we make it work. But I much prefer when split-screen is like this for 7th gen third person shooters: (That's the first Army of Two.)
Fullscreen vertical split, the best way.
Anyway, guess I'm doing Metroid Prime 3 and Lost Planet 2 initially for this theme.

I think RE5 did that too. The early days of HDTV's and gaming were pretty wonky...
Lost Planet 2 has cool boss battles and spectacle, that's about all I remember about it though. It's pretty short.

I'm not completely sure what I'm going to jump into first, but I think I may end up doing a "boomer shooter". It might be time for me to finally sit down and play through Duke Nukem 3D.

Should bode well for you. It's got more in common with Dark Forces than Doom I'd say. Do you have the new 3D World Tour version? It has new rendering tech that prevents the graphics from looking distorted/warped when you look up and down, it's a nice change haha. I think Ion Fury was built on top of that technique and all the Build Engine refinements over the years. World Tour also has a new episode from some of the old devs, so it feels pretty consistent with the whole package. Has some fun modern jokes and cameos in there.
I've been itching for a Quake 1-2 replay myself with the new ports they've gotten and I could bump them up to higher difficulties this time. But I think I'll favor brand new games for me before this idea.

I've got whatever the GOG build is, and that's likely how I'll play. Or I might use eduke32 and play on the Deck. Not sure yet. I feel like it may be better with a mouse, but I can probably do pretty well on the touchpads on there. Ex: Oh crap, I was playing a little bit of Disaster: Day of Crisis the other day while testing out the 'TINK. Might be time to play through that one, too!
