I mean, I have to wonder where they draw the line. There are clearly other fan books out there, and somehow they don't run afoul of Nintendo. Weird that they picked this one.

I wonder if it's Kickstarter that tripped the alarm? Are there other fan book projects from there that weren't an issue?

Not entirely sure, but perhaps that was it. I know that I contributed to several volumes of Gamespite, but those are self-published books and most likely fall under more of a fanzine review-type structure. I'm not sure where the "fair use" line is - I suspect it's quite murky overall.

The Nintendo I loved died with Iwata. Modern Nintendo sucks ass.

So an update on the guide shutdown - Kotaku apparently got some information wrong, and Philip Summers alluded (but didn't confirm) that the company that filed the claim may not have been Nintendo. If it's not Nintendo, then I'd put money on Konami.
Also, the company didn't shut him down, he willingly shut it down himself to make sure he didn't screw over others who had pledged and also to keep himself out of potential trouble, as Kickstarter was moving too slow. It sounds like talks are going amicably, and that something may be worked out.

Reminds me of the cyberspace dungeons in System Shock.

Found this video interesting if you want to get better at shmups. I've learned some of these techniques over time, but for beginners this is very solid advice.

That was a really fun watch. The rhythm comparison is pretty true, I think I'm just better at finger skills than coordinating my whole body for DDR or whatever haha. I liked the experimentation section near the end, definitely some good stuff there.
It feels like a genre with no limit for increasing your skills. At this point it is amusing to me how meditative bullet hells can be in a way. I just don't always have the patience to play a shmup for days/weeks/months on end. But that's always a good counterpoint to when I see some people complain about the prices for this genre at times. Sure, a coin fed styled finish might only be 30-60 minutes. But you didn't really master it until you can do it legit and it feels glorious when you do. So anyone who thinks this genre lacks depth or replay value is just out of their mind.
Still hoping to someday try and 1CC Mushihimesama.
