Not a fan of FFV. And yes, the Red Mage/Wizards are much better in the first game. They're a good jack-of-all-trades, able to adapt a bit in pretty much any category. They might not be as amazing in each category as the dedicated classes, but as one of the slots, they're quite useful.

Oh, I've played through it, it just didn't take. I liked FFIII a lot more. Ninjas and Sages for the win.

I beat FFV years ago and it bored me mightily. Sorry Xeo.

If it makes you feel any better, Xeo, I liked FFV a fair amount. What intruiges me most about it now, though, is that 4 Job Fiesta thing they do every year. I've not tried it yet, but I love that the game had this capability to be so replayable with just a slight limitation, and that each job class is capable of dealing with various scenarios, but in pretty different ways. I'll chuck out some more character love in the 1-per-game fashion, at least for the ones that had characters I really liked: FF4 - This one is tough, because its really the awkwardness between Cecil, Kain, and Rosa that appeals to me. Kain is probably my favorite character, I have a soft spot for those Vegeta-esk villain/hero dudes. FF6 - Yeah, Celes. I like a lot of 6's characters well enough, but a lot, for me, are fairly throwaway story-wise. Cyan comes pretty close in his one story moment. FF7 - This one is super hard, cuz I really love the shit out of this game, despite its flaws. I think Cid is a fairly standout character, though, just because it was weird to see the action-y, foul-mouthed character type go through such a brutal arc, and it was so adorable to see him finally get his dream later on. Plus, Dragoons are cool as fuck. Red XIII got me with the cheese too, when that tear drops from his dead dad statue, phew! FF8 - I... don't really like the characters in this game. Some have okay personality, but they all just feel... there, for no reason (Until the game dumps a reason for everyone at once). I guess Zell was kinda funny, and Squall had some good moments. Seifer is probably my favorite overall. FF9 - The Vivi/Steiner relationship is pure gold to me. Dagger is also super cool. I think Eiko and Amarant are the only characters I didn't care for, pretty solid cast overall. FF10 - Khimari is the only one I could do without. I also really love this game, and my 2nd time through made me adore it even more. Yuna seems so aloof initially, but once you know the overall plot, she is really interesting. FF12 - I spent 180 hours in this game, and I barely remember what happens (Other than fighting Yiazmat forever). Balthier and Ash stood out for me, Fran was pretty cool, Vaan and Penello are probably my least favorite characters in a FF game ever. I liked playing FF12, but I never feel for its characters as much as in the other games. Next year I can start talking about FF13 and lose all respect for taste I may have garnered over the years.

that 4 Job Fiesta thing they do every year / game had this capability to be so replayable with just a slight limitation I don't see what's so great about it. Yeah you get to randomly have jobs decided for your party. Yay? You're still playing through the same game, with the same scenarios, same bosses, same everything. Your characters simply have different jobs (classes). That all sounds very boring and repetitive to me personally. It's like replaying a racing game over and over where each time you simply pick a different car. Yeah the car might handle a little differently on a case by case basis, but the tracks never change. I just don't understand the fervor man. Next year I can start talking about FF13 and lose all respect for taste I may have garnered over the years. It blows my mind that FFXIII is almost ten years old. SLOW DOWN TIME GYADDAMNN

I mean, it very well could be boring, I've not tried it yet, but in reading some other's posts while playing it, it sounds like you really have to dig into the game's system to figure out how to get past some stuff. I'm not sure if there's some sort of level limit, since it seems like grinding would eventually get you there (Though I think there is a time element at play?). I'd like to take a stab at it, but admittedly, I consider myself a... comfort gamer? I don't know what to call it, but I like continuing to play games that I am already familiar with, finding challenge within a system I already know something about. Its why I like shmups and rhythm games so much, since skill tends to transfer across those games, so it still feels like a constant progression. I can totally understand why this would just be boring as all heck to someone, though, but its in there that I find the 4 Job thing intriguing, and get why others would enjoy it so much. Sadly, possibly as a side effect to this, I get really weird and nervous diving into unfamiliar territory, which is why only this last year or so I've been playing all these classics for the first time. And yeah, it felt ridiculous to me that playing Dead Space was partaking in a retro activity. Its more modern than just about anything I've played

Actually, I kinda do get it. It's a bit like playing through a fighting game with different characters. What's more, getting a random team can drastically affect how you have to approach each battle, even if they're the same bosses. You'll likely have gigantic holes in your roster, or potentially have an overpowered squad that tears through everything.
I guess it's a little bit like my playing Tecmo Super Bowl as well. I might be playing the "same" game, but depending on what team I pick, the strategies I have to employ change significantly. (Not to mention picking the Colts... oof.)

I like continuing to play games that I am already familiar with, finding challenge within a system I already know something about. I see what you're saying there. And I don't think you're "wrong" or anything. Just me personally, once I beat a game, I'm moving on. I just enjoy new experiences more than retreading familiar ones. It's very rare for me to replay a game I've already finished all the way through again. It's a bit like playing through a fighting game with different characters. Yeah but replaying a fighting game doesn't take 33 hours to beat with long unskippable cutscenes. But hey, whatever makes people happy! I just think a more apt name would be Four Job Slog is all.

That's not a Final Fantasy! Whatever man, it has Cloud in it. Also I beat Sephiroth, that's got to count for something! Then Ergheiz is a FF, too! Fun fact: the dungeon crawler included with it is better than Final Fantasy 1, 2 and 5. EDIT - I mean this!
