I've only played the original EotB, and it was on PC. I remember stopping after a couple hours with it. That was due to combat occurring in real time, which for me was problematic due to the interface. I would have enjoyed the game a lot more if it were turn-based instead. The aesthetics were still great though, definitely captures that dungeon crawl feel.

Yeah, unfortunately, Lands of Lore also apes that interface, and I didn't much care for it there, either. And that was with me playing in an environment that was actually a bit more optimal; playing on a tablet, you can punch those buttons quite quickly. Spellcasting in that game was a pain, though. I found out later that attacking, I believe, is mapped to the function keys, but you don't have a similar setup for spells. Too bad, because I probably would enjoy a real-time interface if I could quickly react to threats in that manner.

Nice, some big box PC games. Very cool. And some games I don't see all that often, either. Definitely jealous of the N64 find - I've been needing a backup for a while, but I refuse to pay top dollar for one. If the controllers are in bad shape, you could always replace the analog sticks.

I like how the first game anayo shows is the LEGO one. A man has his priorities.

It's just the empty boxes, no software, but still really cool! The cashier was actually puzzled why I would want empty boxes with no discs inside. I told her, "No, really, it's a thing. People want these." As for the N64, if you want to trade with me again just let me know. I have like 5 N64s now. They seem to be somewhat common in my area. Lego Rock Raiders actually has some personal significance for me. I played it when I was 9 or 10 years old on my Dad's PC. I really liked it, but it didn't run very well. Eventually I reached a stage with so much stuff on screen at once that it tanked the frame rate and made it unplayable, so I gave up. Recently I looked into pre-owned copies on eBay but was unable to find one for less than $20. I'm really excited and will definitely play this for my ongoing year of Windows 9x gaming!

I'm sure you're well aware of how popular LEGO video games have been in the past twenty years. Stuff like LEGO Star Wars and LEGO Batman for example. If I had been exposed to them when I was the right age for Banjo Kazooie, Spyro, Tonic Trouble, etc. I would probably love them now. But my first memory of seeing one was age 18. I was at a Wal-Mart watching a child play what I think was Lego Star Wars. An employee asked me what I thought. I said, "It looks goofy." The employee said, "C'mon, it's Lego. Of course it's goofy." My fixation for the Windows 9X Lego games probably owes itself to 1) Lego being a much bigger deal to me at the point in my life when those games were released, 2) being exposed to lots of Lego advertising such as via Lego magazine, which would loudly remind me of the growing catalog of Lego software every month or so 3) being dependent on Mom and Dad and therefore being unable to get said Lego games for myself. So I came to see them as being more magical than they really are. It's probably evident from my HRG article about Lego Island that for me it's more about adult me re-experiencing media I was exposed to as a kid. Or experiencing them for the first time in the case of the ones I never actually got to play.

So basically your interest in late '90s PC LEGO games, stems from childhood nostalgia. And the modern LEGO games don't fall under that umbrella. I get it. I've tried playing a variety of the more modern LEGO games... they didn't hold my interest. I only tried them because they have good co-op. Unfortunately the gameplay is something that only a child would find captivating.

I definitely get it. That nostalgia is crazy powerful. Heck, even though I rarely actually play with them (or even open them sometimes), I will pick up Transformers. And I also snagged those Nintendo Power mags, which are an amazing nostalgia bomb.
