Well, that's easy. Front Mission 4 is my favorite mech game as well as one of my favorite SRPGs period. Best gameplay mechanics in the series, weather conditions, fair challenge throughout the game, day/night transition, fairly likeable characters, decent storylines and voice acting. Aside from the Front Mission series, another SRPG featuring mechs I really like is Faselei! by Sacnoth. It has a very interesting gameplay system where you have to input a series commands during your turn, trying to predict how the enemy will act in the next turn. It's another game I need and want to go back to and beat. I'd also like to mention Mirai Senshi: Lios for the NES, which has fairly deep gameplay for a 1989 game and predates the first FM by six years. Does get repetitive though. Can't say I was very impressed by Vanguard Bandits, but I might go back to it eventually. Outside of the strategy genre I'd like to mention Future Cop L.A.P.D. by EA Redwood Shores. An isometric mech shooter, quite arcade-y, but very fun. Outstanding OST. I don't feel it gets enough recognition.

I haven’t played many mech games, but Bulk Slash for the Sega Saturn is probably my favorite. That game really ought to have come out in the West. My second favorite is probably Shogo: Armored Division for the PC. By all accounts it’s a rather sloppy game. The controls don’t have a pleasant tactile feeling and the stage designs are obtuse, like they ought to have revised them some more. It’s not a great game and I’m only mentioning it because I know so little about mech games. However, it has a 1999 look and feel which are charming to me. It was at least worth a few dollars on GOG.

I have beaten Faselei!, and I enjoyed it very much. It reminded me of a simpler Carnage Heart. I'm not a fan of Vanguard Bandits. Never played Future Cop L.A.P.D.Bulk Slash is a fun arcade style jam. I beat Shogo: Armored Division many many years ago. I hated it personally. Only beat it to get my money out of it I guess. --- A top 5 from me... Front Mission: Gun Hazard I think we all know why by now.
I loved Front Mission 4. No it's not perfect. I can understand why some folks think it's about as fun as watching paint dry. But as a hardcore mecha SRPG it pleased me greatly.
It pains me that Mechwarrior 3 is so hard to play today. Not even GOG has made it possible yet. As a mech combat sim, Mechwarrior 3 just did everything right. More people deserve to be able to play this. Of the four Armored Cores I've beaten so far, Project Phantasma has been my favorite. I love the technical details of configuring your own battle mech (armored core) to the Nth degree, then running it through missions, and of course reaching the top of the arena. I've enjoyed every game I've played in this series, and hope to play through many more. What would you get if you mixed Bionic Commando with Assault Suits Valken? Something not entirely unlike Aquales. This game is asskicking awesomeness with a brilliant OST. Totally worth the hassle of emulating a Sharp X68000. - Bonus mention:
Imagine if Assault Suits Valken had ecchi cutscenes. Yes, that's what's going on here. Fun game. Fun cutscenes if you're into that sort of thing. Unfortunately Night Slave remains Japanese only to this day. That didn't stop me from beating it though. The game I mean.

Ooh, I really need to play Aquales. I went to the trouble to set up X68000 games on my OG XBOX after all.

Future Cop: LAPD is pretty great. I still have a PC copy of the game. I never did finish it, but my brother did. He was much more the mech aficionado than I was.
I think if we just include the best mech games beaten, my list starts and stops with only one game: Front Mission: Gun Hazard. Throwing in a game I put a lot of time into would see Front Mission 4 also included, which seems to be quite well received on this, err, front.
I figure Aquales will get added to that list at some point.

Interesting to see two favoring votes for Front Mission 4 here. A random thing I've noticed as a total outsider on the series (only dabbled into some of 3 years back), the OST for 4 doesn't seem nearly as good as 1 and 3's? I won't let that stop me from checking it out though, looks really cool. I'll play the first one and then maybe go to 4.
Gun Hazard is probably my new favorite unless something else major comes to mind. Not full on mecha games per se, but Xenogears and the Xenosaga trilogy are chalk full of this stuff. I absolute loved the mecha battles in Xenosaga III.
Armored Core 2 is my favorite in the series. I haven't played them all, but I played one or two of the originals on the PSX, 2, 2 Another Age, 3, 4, and attempted 5. Good stuff all around but 2 was the one I got the most into. It felt really cool being able to replicate the mecha unit on the game cover as well as the last two tough units you fight in the arena.

Ooh, I really need to play Aquales. I loved it. The OST is worth it alone. A random track: Future Cop: LAPD is pretty great. Huh I just read it supports co-op and is on PS1 (besides just PC). That's intriguing. Armored Core 2 is my favorite in the series. I've beaten the first three on PS1, as well as AC2. AC2 seemed to handle the transition to PS2 well. I'm very much looking forward to playing more entries eventually. Eventually.

It's kind of insane how many Armored Core's are on the PS2. There was something about 3 I didn't like in comparison to 2 and Another Age though, so I guess it turned me off from it for awhile.
Armored Core 2 Armored Core 2: Another Age Armored Core 3 Silent Line: Armored Core Armored Core: Nexus Armored Core: Formula Front Armored Core: Nine Breaker Armored Core: Last Raven
Haven't played any of these.

Was never crazy about any of this stuff to be perfectly honest. I guess I just find mechs themselves to be kinda ugly and off-putting. I'd rather play a game where I can look at humans throughout the whole experience.
That said, Gun Hazard and Blood Gear are my faves. Those are just undeniably cool.
