Too bad there are still no real alternatives to PSCX2, either. AetherSX2 was getting there, but it's Android only and unfortunately no longer being developed ( here's why: aethersx2.com/ ). It's the closest competitor to PCSX2 that I've seen. Not a real alternative though, given the circumstances.

AetherSX2 basically is PCSX2 - it uses most of its codebase, but a few additions for Android.
PCSX2 is impressive, and perhaps it will be fully "set it and forget it" some day, but the PS2 is a really, really wonky system, much like the Saturn. That it works as well as it does already is nuts. But all its various quirks (not to mention games that still struggle on crazy beefy machines like MGS3) make me still stick with original hardware in most cases. I'd definitely consider picking up a PS2, they're very cheap. And maybe get an Open PS2 Loader setup going. Although I'd really like to see a true ODE for the system.

Aren't FMV's basically just static video files within the data? Always a crapshoot with emulators and those, never able to render them in higher resolutions or whatever. But people can with AI now. I figure they're extracting the FMV itself to do that though. Interlacing is a big issue with PS2 stuff as well. I had to tinker that setting to something like "buzzsaw" for Shadow Tower Abyss and King's Field IV to look right. I never would have figured that out on my own. The fact that PS2 games are both CD's and DVD's probably complicates things a bit too.

Speaking of PS2, pretty cool post from John Linneman of DigitalFoundry listing out the games that were 60FPS:

Yeah, although they all used a mix of codecs and compression schemes.
PS2 games really are something that you can tell were explicitly designed around CRTs. That being said, some games can indeed be forced to 480p using OPL/GS Mode Selector without any issues... and some definitely can't.

It appears that underclocking PSCX2 helps with the slowdown issues in that game (that's EE Cycle Rate - 75%). If I understand correctly, overclocking it may increase the game's internal framerate, but slows down emulation, while underclocking it would logically do the opposite... though it could also cause issues. I'll find out when I play the game for real... which is Dirge of Cerberus. I don't care what the reviews say, it's fast-paced and it seems pretty fun. And non-RPG Square games have always been underrated just because they come from Square.

Fascinating stuff. One has to wonder what N64 could have looked like if all devs had known some of these tricks in the past.

There's a new Virtual Boy emulator in town... for 3DS. Where it should have always been! It's a fork of r3DDragon, itself a fork of Red Dragon, and is highly performant, even on base hardware. I put it on my 3DS XL and was floored to see Wario Land running full speed in 3D mode. Well done to the devs. github.com/skyfloogle/red-viper

That's kind of rad... and I always forget there was a Wario Land on the Virtual Boy. Guess they kind of played with the perspective a bit? It looks cool.
