Has anyone looked into the Sega Ages classic re-releases on Switch? It's interesting how they have some new features. Right now, Sonic the Hedgehog, Phantasy Star, Outrun, and Thunder Force IV are out. I'm really excited to see Sonic the Hedgehog 2 is planned, maybe we can finally get that Hidden Labyrinth Zone added in that's only been available in some phone port up to this point.

So these are the classic games but with enhancements, meaning they aren't 100% just ports. I think that's fine, as long as you can choose to play the games in their origin incarnation as an option.

They're closer to ROM hacks than anything, really. They're an edge case where I can see the arguments about them either being compliant or non-compliant. You can play in no-frills mode, though. For Phantasy Star, Ages mode gives you an auto-map to the side (kinda like Gold Box Companion does for the Gold Box games), and you can tweak the encounter rate, reducing the number of encounters and bumping up the experience/gold gains.

Ignoring these seems counter productive to me. You guys don't find these releases fascinating? It's a miracle an old company themselves with retained source code (I'm assuming) and classic IP's would even bother to reverse engineer some old games. I think this stuff is really cool. They aren't remakes, remasters, or straight ports sure. Can we just be excited for once?
How are Neo-Geo games on Switch with arcade options and emulators any different? I know some of you love those plugins for emulators too. Getting a little silly here.

I think the sticking point is that portions of the game have been altered. We're just looking at the rules as originally defined! I do think this is one of those cases that puts stress on the rule as written. Do the Neo Geo games add content? I don't think filters change anything, and I guess it matters how much the options differ from those given via dipswitches. Again, though, if those are changed in the same way as these, I think it's kosher overall. The division is pretty clear in my head, anyway. There are some discussions that might address your concerns, though. As for being excited, well... the one that is the biggest hitter for me is Phantasy Star, but I have no desire to play through it again since I finished it recently. I know, I know, I'm a blasted charlatan. Maybe I'll revisit it years from now this way, though.

I only own Puzzle Bobble right now, but I'm sure the initial splash page is not what you see when you boot up any of its arcades. You get a menu with four options for: Japanese Version Original Mode, English Original, Hi Score Mode, then Caravan Mode. Once you go into a mode, Start brings up a config menu and you can change controls, difficulty level, etc. I assume that's hardware stuff.
...
So if an un-Working Designs patch or hack came out in 2019, is that fine? How about that guy who "fixed" Sonic 3D Blast? If anything Sega Ages being OFFICIAL makes it seem more kosher to me.

Yeah, see, I think that falls into the same category as a ROM hack, 'cause, well, it is. It's basically a Game Genie code. Just so you know, I think the Ages titles are kosher since they include the original, untouched games, and I think that's what Ex was trying to intimate. M2 always does a great job of catering to the purists. We ain't trying to rag on you, honest! Have they released a list of the other titles they're looking to port?

Restructuring existing content of old games into new layouts = HRG compliant Making "under the hood" numerical stat changes to old games = HRG compliant Replacing Japanese language with English language in an old game = HRG compliant Adding brand new graphics and brand new audio to old games = not HRG compliant
Something like that.

They also mention down the road they hope to do some Saturn/Dreamcast titles.
Very excited for Thunder Force AC, since this will be only the second home release of the arcade version. The only other release is on one of the two Thunder Force Gold collections on Saturn, which of course was Japanese only.

Dude. Dude. If they did some Saturn in particular, I'd be a happy camper.
Panzer Dragoon Saga, Sega. Do it. Do it.
(A little Shining Force III wouldn't hurt, either. Although I think I'd like to see a remake of that game instead. No chance we ever get something like that, though.)
