It's not unplayable, you either have to have a patch or a created XBOX Live profile on your machine. Thankfully, I still have mine set up, if for whatever reason I decide to play the game.

Thankfully the two GameCube versions don't suffer from that problem. I've owned this version for many years now: ... and I was thinking about giving it a try this year, mainly because bonesnapdeez and dunpeal2064 praise the game so highly. However for being a story-lite hack 'n grindy thing, I'm not sure if I want to invest this much time: If this was something I could beat in 20-25 hours, maybe. - That reminds me of another Phantasy Star game I never see anyone talk about on forums: I swear it's like that game doesn't even exist anymore, except for the lone copy on my shelf. Maybe it fell out of another dimension into my room.

Ex : It's been too long since I played PSO, but I can't imagine it takes that long to complete a first run. But yeah I remember logging about 90 hours on it, OFFLINE! Played a lot with a buddy though, had some intense heated moments over the boss loot drops at times... this obviously wasn't when looters had separated loot per player like some games nowadays. lol I had a blast with PSO but haven't played it since it came out on the GC, so I wonder what I'd think of it now. I'm pretty sure there's only like 8-10 levels if I remember right, but in looter fashion you spend hours upon hours going through these levels again and again.
The OST and world were a 10+ for me.
Guess I'm that oddball that loved PSO but still haven't really clicked with the main 4 games.

There hasn't really been another online loot game that grabbed me like PSO. I spent years playing on private servers on PC and was friends with a lot of the speed running community of the time.

Didn't know EP3 was a thing haha. The last big one I knew about was Universe I think? The one that was rumored to be getting a Western release for like two years. Sega dropped the ball. It could have been their Monster Hunter!
EDIT: I guess I'm just thinking of Phantasy Star Online 2, from 2012. Phantasy Star Universe looks like some older weird thing after PSO.

There was also an Episode 4 in the PC exclusive Version Blue Burst.
Episode 3 was a weird card game spin-off.

The last big one I knew about was Universe I think? Phantasy Star Universe released in 2006 (PS2/360/PC). Phantasy Star Universe: Ambition of the Illuminus (PS2/360/PS2) released in 2007.
In 2008 Phantasy Star Zero (DS) and Phantasy Star Portable (PSP) released. In 2009 Phantasy Star Portable 2 (PSP) released. In 2012 Phantasy Star Online 2 (PC/Vita/PS4/Switch/Android/iOS) released. <-Japan Only
Phantasy Star Nova (Vita) was the most recently series entry in 2015. <-Japan Only - Can anyone guesstimate how long it takes to beat Phantasy Star Online Eps.1 & 2 single player?

We talked about this last year playa.
That HLTB estimate seems way too high. By at least 15 hours or so.
If you're intimidated by the length though... just go for the DC original. It's a much tighter self-contained experience. Episode II ultimately feels like a bunch of "bonus content" that can start to feel tedious when playing alone.
