We talked about this last year playa. My memory just isn't what it used to be man. With the GameCube version, are Episode I & II not separate things? Meaning you could play through Ep.1 on its own? Are they interwoven together? I could deal with a 45 hour game, as long as the content remained fresh and interesting throughout the experience. But having to grind the exact same dungeon ten times to raise money/levels just to proceed isn't fun for me.

The Episodes are separated in the GC version, so you could just play Episode 1 if you wanted to. You basically load your character into the episode you want to play.
Might also be worth mentioning, you can beat PSO without ever replaying a dungeon, in fact there is a mode (I think Challenge or something like that) that has you make a fresh character and play through the entire game without backtracking. You would want to spend some time in each dungeon to get some amount of gear and levels, of course, but I think even 45 hours is way over what you could tackle PSO in.
I always recommend the GC port, its basically a ver 3 to the DCs 1 and 2, I think its just an overall improvement over ver2 on dc. Episode 2 is just a bonus, though I think its third dungeon is the best dungeon in all of PSO. Plus, if you've cleared all of Episode 1, you'll be able to breeze through the early parts of Episode 2, which I think are the parts that turn people off.
Definitely interested to see what you think of the game!

Definitely interested to see what you think of the game! Thanks for the information, that explained things very well. I am planning to give PSO a go this year, not exactly sure when. My poor neglected GameCube needs some action though for sure. What do you or bonesnapdeez think of the later PSO installments? Are the Universe, Portable, Zero entries any good?

Heh, I was just writing about Universe for the '09 RPGs thread.
I've played all three of those, and none of them really connected with me the way PSO did, though its hard to pin down why. I think the simplicity and more hands-off narrative of PSO helped a lot, they tried to add a lot more to these games, which brought them out of pure looters and into more action-jrpg territory, where they couldn't hold up quite as well for me.

This. Those games are bogged down with atrocious long-winded writing and terrible NPCs. The handheld titles suffer from some severe gameplay issues. They're slow, grainy, super zoomed-in. The original cluster of "PSO" games (of which I'd include part III) are the only good post-Genesis Phantasy Star titles.

I liked PSZ. It was like a cute mini PSO.
