I liked Daikatana for GBC pretty well, too. Interesting game. Don't remember what I rated it, but it was good.

I went back and added some notations. * means it's one of the games I really like on that particular console, ! means it's one of my favorite RPGs, period. The first one is relative; Dark Lord is one of the best NES RPGs, for example, so I put a *, but there are plenty of SNES and PSX RPGs that are just as good without an asterisk, because there's enough very good and excellent RPGs on these systems that a good RPG isn't automatically an highlight of its library.

I think I like toei's nomenclature better. Might swap to that.

Some questionable entries; I'm willing to take off as necessary. Sometimes where to draw the line is hard! EDIT: Using toei 's terminology, * means I really enjoyed it (8/10), ! means it's downright fantastic (9+/10). NES: - Dragon Warrior - Dragon Warrior II* - Dragon Warrior III! - Dragon Warrior IV! - The Legend of Zelda! - Zelda II! - Legacy of the Wizard - Castlevania II* - Final Fantasy* - Final Fantasy III! - StarTropics! - StarTropics II: Zoda's Revenge* - The Magic of Scheherazade* - Battle of Olympus - Willow! - Crystalis! - EsperDream 2 - Destiny of an Emperor* - Gargoyle's Quest II* - Mashin Hero Wataru* - River City Ransom! - Tombs & Treasure - Cosmo Police Galivan (sort of counts?)- Faxanadu* - Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves* - Wing of Madoola (sort of?)- Arkista's Ring (mild RPG elements?)- Day Dreamin' Davey (ARPG, no leveling though) - The Lone Ranger - Rygar- Wizards & Warriors III (debatable, but much more adventure-style than the first two) - Goonies II (also debatable, might be the same as Spellcaster) - Star Trek (probably also like Spellcaster, mostly adventure)
- Dragon Scroll - Pirates! SMS: - Phantasy Star - Golden Axe Warrior - Danan: The Jungle Fighter - Wonder Boy: The Dragon's Trap* (on a technicality, via remake) Game Boy: - Final Fantasy Legend* - Final Fantasy Legend II! - Final Fantasy Adventure! - Gargoyle's Quest! - Dragon Warrior III! - For the Frog the Bell Tolls* - Daikatana - The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening! - Zelda: Oracle of Ages! - Zelda: Oracle of Seasons! - Pokemon Blue - Rolan's Curse 2 (I think? Memory is fuzzy.) Game Gear: - Ax Battler - Defenders of Oasis* - Sylvan Tale*

I agree that we can be a bit loose with the definition of "RPG" and include Zelda, etc., but personally I'd remove Arkista's Ring (it's a straight-up overhead action game), and probably Goonies 2, Star Trek, Rygar (isn't is just a side-scroller? I included Danan because you level up, equip gear, use items, AND there are NPCs and a storyline, but I didn't include Dahna, which has level-ups but is otherwise a standard side-scroller), Wing of Madoola and Cosmo Police Gallivan.
I'm surprised you like Willow that much. I couldn't even finish it, it just struck me as utterly mediocre. Basic Zelda-style ARPG fighting, obnoxious, overly large screen-by-screen mazes that don't reward exploration much, basic NES RPG story.

Seems fair. I can't remember, didn't Galivan have a leveling system? But yeah, it's very close to Metroid. So is Rygar, which is basically an early Metroidvania, and it does actually have a leveling system. It's kinda borderline.

Yeah you guys are losing me with Zelda, Castlevania, etc. On top of this annoying work week, that's just adding to my headache if I were to try and come up with my own list. Easy to say I haven't beaten as much as you all, probably because I'm more spread out and play modern stuff.

Knights of the Round is not an RPG, for example. If they had shops and NPCs, I'd agree it's close enough to belong, but Rygar has neither, and I think that's also true of Galivan.

We're more trying to be all-encompassing. There are quite a few I'd consider knocking off, but Zelda ain't one of 'em. It has all the elements of an ARPG, you just don't see pretty numbers rise with a leveling system. And that's a good point, toei. Seems like a reasonable stance to take, so I'll knock 'em off.

It has all the elements of an ARPG, you just don't see pretty numbers rise with a leveling system. Yup, I'm good with Zelda too. And Landstalker, and Alundra, etc. As Sarge said, the argument that it's not a RPG series hinges on one element alone - experience points and levels - and I don't think RPGs are defined by a single element. It's got towns, dungeons, shops, equipment, NPCs, a story, it's basically an RPG. The non-linear Castlevanias are borderline. Out of the two I've played on the GBA, for example, I'd say Aria of Sorrow felt more like one, while Circle of the Moon, not quite. I also wanted to keep straight-up adventure titles off of the list, because then we'd have to include everything from Snatcher to Silent Hill (older survival horror titles were action-adventure games when it comes down to it), and at that point we're straying a little too far for my tastes. But I think RPGs and adventures are basically cousins, the way most old-school arcade-style action genres are.
