XeogredConsidering both Sarge and I loved Ys8, I think it's a safe bet you'll at least like it. I recommend taking your time and doing all the side-quests you can (including Dana's solo stuff, which is easy to miss) and working on improving your relationships with all the characters in the game. That way you'll get the True Ending. It's not often that I really enjoy a JRPG's plot, but Ys8's plot was quite good, and full of surprises. Definitely avoid plot spoilers if you go reading about this game while playing it. And yeah, Ys8 is too easy on Normal... so there's like three or four difficulties beyond that one. I guess that should have been an indication that Normal in this game is actually Easy. Which makes me wonder... how easy is Easy?

From what I can tell this is the kind of game that'll be fun to fully explore the maps in, get all the chests, etc. I've also seen a few spots that look like they require traversal abilities, like climbing vines.
Just got Sahad for a third character. The T-Rex boss was actually tough on Hard, was looking like 2-3 hits would kill me so I finally had to use some healing items haha.
Suikoden vibes with this campsite base being something that'll build up throughout the game. I like that a lot.

There's so much stuff I'd like to talk about, but I really don't want to spoil anything. I'll just say that this game's complexity and depth, in both game design and plot, continue to evolve and deepen all the way to the end. It's really impressive how Falcom was able to balance all of that into a cohesive experience that doesn't topple under its own weight.

Yeah I'm going in pretty blind here, I don't really know anything about this game other than some of you guys praise it and it's a rather popular modern Falcom/Y's game. I knew it was an ARPG and thought these newer games looked really cool featuring parties and more than just Adol.
I wonder if Xenoblade was an influence on some ideas, like the camp base stuff I've seen so far.

I wonder if Xenoblade was an influence on some ideas, like the camp base stuff I've seen so far. Well as far as the base combat design goes, with the fast three party switch rock-paper-scissors combat, for that Ys VIII is evolved from Ys Seven. And Ys Seven released in 2009, before Xenoblade Chronicles did in 2010 (we're talking Japan release dates here). So I don't think the Ys8 combat system is derived from XC. Now maybe the evolving camp concept was an influence, and kind of the way the world exploration works, and the crafting system perhaps. Ys8 is one of the few RPGs I've played that does crafting really, really well. Like in a way that's fun and rewarding instead of grindy and annoying.

Haha yeah, I should have figured earlier Y's was leading up to a lot of design decisions here.
I love that this and Xenoblade are two very different styles of modern ARPG's. Visions of Mana I think looks more like the Y's 8 camp, these are like a little more platformer-ish, looser, and maybe closer to character action. FF12/Xenoblade feel like they have more going on under the hood with numbers and mechanics, you're more grounded not being able to jump or are restricted in ways, could maybe argue they have a little Diablo DNA in there. There can be a time and place for both versions, so I'm not saying either is better or worse. Might just be a me thing over-analyzing all this haha. But yeah Y's is awesome so far and probably exactly what I needed after a lot of traditional turn based SMT this year so far. Can't wait to play more.

I think Sarge has it right that at their core XC games are MMORPG leaning. But the modern Ys games (from Seven onward) are straight up multi-party action-JRPG, without the amount of under the hood spreadsheet complexity the XC games employ. And yeah man if you like jumping around while fighting Ys8 won't disappoint. I won't spoil it. I'll just say there's a fair amount of combat skills you can learn, that are meant to be employed by attacking from above. You are in for quite a ride.

Yeah, Xeno is single-player MMORPG, although they handle enough right that they're better than those.

It is funny to think I'd probably enjoy some MMO's out there... if they were fully playable offline. FF14 mainly comes to mind. Stuff like DQX Offline doesn't really cut it though, nothing about that game looks appealing to me. lol

All I can say is play DQ9 if you want single player DQ MMORPG.
