Yeah, FM3 is a game that definitely ranks on my "I want to beat someday" list. I've got it on my PSP ready to play. I'd like to finish Alisa's campaign eventually. Well you know what next month is...

I keep telling myself I need to play Phantasy Star. Then I think about huge Wizardry style dungeons and I mentally toss it back on the "someday" pile. Say what you will about how good PS looked back in the day, but I'll take the Dragon Quest or Final Fantasy overhead view any day. Keeps getting turned around and lost to a bare minimum and saves a ton of play time.

I'd definitely recommend giving it a go, just to get a grasp on the series history. I think the 3D dungeons look cool, but yeah, keep that graphing paper on hand... or use a guide. ( Ex gon' yell at me for that one!) It's really the combat that I don't care for, but someone pointed out that it's very much early, vintage Wizardry as well.

Then I think about huge Wizardry style dungeons and I mentally toss it back on the "someday" pile. As I understand things, the Switch port has an onscreen auto-map built in. So if you have a Switch maybe go that route? I think the 3D dungeons look cool, but yeah, keep that graphing paper on hand... or use a guide. On one hand, I beat Phantasy Star when I was ten years old, without ever mapping a single dungeon. On the other hand, I had incredible amounts of free time as a kid. As an adult, I'd probably map the harder dungeons in the back half of the game these days.

Yeah, they're not as complex as a lot of those PC RPGs. Even if you don't use maps, you can muddle through eventually. The closest I came to a game like that was Arcana, but I was obviously a lot older.

I was going through some of the posts I missed and saw Vagrant Story mentioned. That's yet another one that I've started up a few times and never finished. It's so impressive for a PS1 game! Ex if you liked Vagrant Story, I recommend Crimson Shroud for 3DS. It's the brain child of the same guy (Yasumi Matsuno) behind Vagrant Story but it goes all in on the Dungeons & Dragons asthetics of using actual dice rolls and whatnot. It's also really short with the exception of one mission that's heavily RNG based (and which Matsuno himself hates but was forced to put it in to please Level-5 executives). If you ever give it a try and get stuck, you need to fight a certain kind of skeleton enemy until it drops a key. Stupid. But outside of that, it's an incredible game with the same level of thought behind it as Vagrant Story. Edit: Xeogred for someone who has trouble getting through Secret of Mana on SNES, do you recommend the remake that's on PS4?

Edit: Xeogred for someone who has trouble getting through Secret of Mana on SNES, do you recommend the remake that's on PS4? I wish I could say, but to me personally that remake looked like a downgrade with the visuals and remixed music, so I never touched it. I've heard mixed things about it.

I've never gotten far in the SNES version so I don't mind restarting... I did enjoy Final Fantasy Adventure's remake (Adventures of Mana) a lot. Ex I'd love a sequel to Crimson Shroud. Heck, even just a straight up re-release on Switch, maybe without the garbage RNG key item.

maybe without the garbage RNG key item I'm convinced that was Level-5's idea, and not Yasumi Matsuno's.
