The one last recommendation from you that might win me over for this month... as probably the biggest Xeno-game fan here, I seriously need to play that one. Just downloaded it and the patch, so I'll maybe mess around with Nintendo DS emulation here soon.
Final Fantasy Adventure is on the Collection of Mana, so that's probably how I might check that one out. I did look to see if there were any color hacks and found nothing. So oh well, maybe the Switch collection has some quick saving or additional features too?

Yeah, the Switch version has three quick save slots you can use. It's also got a pretty convincing original Game Boy filter that looks like the old school display, minus the screen blurring.

as probably the biggest Xeno-game fan here, I seriously need to play that one Often while I was playing through Xenoblade, I found myself thinking "this is like Soma Bringer except shittier". I don't want to get your hopes too high, but you should get some level of enjoyment from playing Soma Bringer. Just know that the initial area is kinda bland and boring, because that's a playable tutorial. After that bit, it all gets awesome and stays awesome. Also this one has a godly OST. I recommend DeSmuME. And you can make the play window a lot bigger than even a DSi XL if you wish: If you want to make the polygons sharper, try the DeSmuME X432R fork: emulationrealm.net/downloads/file/3254-desmume-x432r

Sorry I should have been clearer. When I played Seiken Densetsu 3, the game would crash. The first one is if I started with a certain party the game would just freeze. There were a couple of other spots that I had to play a certain way to get around. After scouring the internet, people aren't reporting these issues, so it might be the game I had.

paulofthewest: Yeah, that sounds potentially like an incorrectly patched version. I haven't had any issues with the game in years.

So does Final Fantasy Adventure itself have a bit of a weird feel to the controls? I wondered if it was input lag with the Switch, or the d-pad issue I've heard about online. But then I jumped into Secret of Mana and it felt completely fine. Maybe FFA just isn't as smooth as say Link's Awakening. It's mainly just the walking movement that feels a bit off and delayed sometimes.

No, it's definitely not as responsive as Link's Awakening. The movement is closer to an 8-bit JRPG. That's probably what's getting you. You end up moving in half-steps a bit like the original Zelda, although it doesn't have that game's "snapping into a groove" if you're off of that half-step alignment, you're either in it or you're not in FFA.
I started a Game Boy ARPG myself, and it's Rolan's Curse II. I'll blabber more later, but it's a pretty decent time so far.

Not sure yet. I skipped forward to the second game because I remember my brother getting pretty close to beating it, and I put a decent amount of time in as well. This was back in the days of VGB-DOS. It's a game I've always wanted to finish. I'm making shockingly quick progress. EDIT: Or maybe not! Checked a guide, and apparently the game wasn't kidding about "choosing your party carefully", because there are a lot more folks I can get. So I'm probably between a third and a half through it, I reckon. Xeogred: If you want to talk even more unresponsive, try this one out. It's still fun, but movement is even closer to a standard JRPG.

Better than the American Sammy games, IMO. On the SNES, the shortest ARPG that's not Ys is probably Gulliver Boy. At the time I hated it because it was so short and I had no idea who anybody was (it's based on an anime), but it might be worth a look. We're not talking elite stuff, though.
