April's Club Retro theme is Action Role Playing Games AKA action-RPGs. I think everyone knows what action-RPGs are, so I won't go into an explanation about it. Now's a great time to play classic or esoteric retro action-RPGs, and share your experiences with the HRG community, right here in this thread. As always, if anyone would like recommendations for particular platforms, just let us know. Meanwhile here are some past threads to trawl for ideas: I will make a special recommendation for anyone who owns a PS3; PLAY DEMON'S SOULS. In the past ten years, Demon's Souls has been the most impressive and amazing action-RPG I've beaten... in the realm of 3D games anyway. For a 2D game, I strongly recommend Brandish II - The Planet Buster on SNES/SFC, or Sword of Vermilion on Genesis/Mega Drive. - As for my personal playing, I'm currently deep into Rogue Galaxy. After I finish it up, I plan to play Seiken Densetsu 3 for the first time, although I'll be playing the professionally localized "Trials of Mana" version (I'm not talking about the modern remake - it's still the SFC game). I've got a few other ideas after that as well.

I like the idea of continuing to call Seiken Densetsu 3 just that, in regards to the SNES/SFC original. With Trials of Mana reserved for the modern remake. Weren't two people looking to play SD3? Looking forward to some new thoughts on it. Anyways, I'm not sure if I'll get in on this month, even though it's one of my favorite genres. Although I want to mention Dragon View here for a reminder to myself. Sarge mentioned it recently and it's one I've never played, so maybe I'll give it a look.
A lot of people here liked King Colossus a lot on Genesis, but I don't think I took to it much or wasn't in the mood for it. In general I still think I struggle to get into Genesis ARPG's for some reason.

In general I still think I struggle to get into Genesis ARPG's for some reason. You might like Arcus Odyssey. It's an isometric shooter but with a flavor coat of action-RPG. I honestly think Sword of Vermilion is the most neglected and underrated Genesis action-RPG. It's super moody and dark, looks obtuse in screenshots, so maybe that's why it's ignored. I'm long overdue a replay myself, but I absolutely adored the game back in 1990.

I'm going to play Diablo for the PC this month. On an unrelated note, I may also try to cover some ground with Heavy Gear in parallel to that, along with the orc campaign of Warcraft II if I feel up to it. But I think Diablo is the only genre-applicable game I feel like playing this month. Next month's mascot platformers them is looking to be light for me too, with 1997's Claw as the only relevant title on my itinerary.

I for one would like to know your thoughts on the original Diablo. Years ago I attempted to play through the PS1 version via co-op with my wife, but we bounced off it. We did manage to take down the Butcher before dropping the game though. IIRC our issue was neither of us are much into loot grinding. The first Diablo isn't too bad about that, but D2 and D3 become exponential about it. I did however really enjoy the dark aesthetic of D1.

I'm planning on Beyond Oasis (Genesis), that looked the most interesting of the recommended.
Seiken Densetsu 3 is a treat, but hopefully they has resolved all the game crashes.

Awesome, I've always admired Beyond Oasis (and the Sega Genesis in general) but I never got around to playing that game in particular. I want to play the Sega Saturn sequel eventually, too (the title is escaping me right now).

King Colossus is pretty wonky until you get a weapon that doesn't have the range of the "sword" in Lagoon. Speaking of Lagoon... ...did you know that the original version was on the X68000? And that it has been translated? And that it isn't like the SNES version, but has an Ys-style bump combat system? Well, now you know! www.romhacking.net/translations/4688/Hope folks enjoy Beyond Oasis, I know I did. Also, anayo, the sequel is Legend of Oasis, and neither game is related to Defenders of Oasis on Game Gear.

Seiken Densetsu 3 is a treat, but hopefully they has resolved all the game crashes. I don't think the "Trials of Mana" version fixes the bugs in the base game. Though I don't know of any unofficial patch that does that either. A cursory glance of available patches on RHDN doesn't appear to show a specific patch that fixes bugs: www.romhacking.net/games/354/If I'm wrong though, and there's a fan patch that fixes all the bugs, I'm interested.
