Go for it! Hopefully it will grab you like it did me. Or at least end up like Ex and enjoy it but not love it.

I'm ahead of the game. I'm a few hours in Chrono Trigger. I never beat it before, so I guess now's the time. That's definitely a fitting example. I know I cited mostly modern entries in the OP, but there are definitely 8/16/32-bit candidates ripe for plucking.

I have virtually no interest in modern gaming, so any choices are going to essentially be from that era (with only a handful of DC, PS2, and even fewer PC titles from the 21st century).

Oh, dang, you're going to be in for lots of revelations about the series. Should be interesting to hear your thoughts when you get started. The reason I've not played MGS4, is it seemed to follow more in line with the MGS2 school of writing/design, as opposed to the far superior MGS3. I was not a fan of MGS2 at all, so that association put me off. But I'm willing to give MGS4 a try these days. That is pretty accurate from my play through of of the MGS series. I do think MGS4 is better than 2 (at the very least the protagonist isn't annoying.) 5 was the worst.
I have no idea what I'll play. If you have any Genesis suggestions, I'd love to hear it. I never finished Ninja Gaiden 3, so I might go that route.

Ex : I predict you'll hate MGS4. Especially as someone that didn't like MGS2. Good luck! Sarge : Halo holds up to me and is pretty awesome. I definitely get some Metroid Prime vibes with it too. I think you'll really dig its world, music, and personality with the alien enemy types and such. Of the "three D's" you mentioned I'd say Halo is comparable to Dark Forces' style. It's simplistic stuff but also feels a bit more like an adventure than Doom or Quake. I like Deus Ex more all around, but it's definitely a bit more hardcore I guess you could say. It's a dense meal, Halo is that quick simple snack.
As for me, assuming that it doesn't take me too long to beat Dragon Quest 3, I'm thinking about these two choices...

I'd argue those are more cult classics than anything, but honestly, given the critical acclaim, they'd both probably fit fine in this month.
I did play several hours of Halo, and enjoyed what I played of it, even if I wasn't spectacular at it. I remember a few deathmatches, and I really quickly picked up on how fantastic the pistol is in that game. I also play rather defensively, so for the most part I didn't get many kills, and didn't get killed much. It would be interesting to see how much differently I approach it now with a lot more years of dual-analog controls under the belt.

Oh... well if we're talking more popular stuff I'm not sure if I have anything that comes to mind. Those two definitely have their ardent fanbases though. Valkyrie Profile has long felt like perhaps the last popular PSX JRPG I still haven't gotten around to, and people make some crazy claims about VBTM being one of the best immersive first person sim games of them all, one of my favorite genres.
I'll have to think of some others, but I feel like I'm starting to have most of the bases covered for genres I like. Now that I've been into Dragon Quest, it seems like Phantasy Star is next up for something I need to check out.

Super Peace Walker gets a lot of flack, but honestly everything I've seen from it looks quite alluring to me. I own it on 360, but haven't played yet, due to not having played MGS4 yet. I have beaten a lot of MGS games though... and MGS3:Subsistence is my favorite. MGS3 was monumentally better than MGS2, and even better than MGS1. As far as big Genesis hits that were highly praised in their time: Disney's Aladdin Gunstar Heroes Phantasy Star IV Shining Force II Shinobi III: Return of the Ninja Master Streets of Rage 2Valkyrie Profile / Vampire the Masquerade: Bloodlines I agree with Sarge, these are cult classics. They aren't the kind of big selling blockbusters this theme is about. However, I'm not gonna try to gatekeep anybody! It's up to your discretion. But you might find this link useful: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lists_of_best-selling_video_games_by_platformI did play several hours of Halo, and enjoyed what I played of it, even if I wasn't spectacular at it. It would be interesting to see how much differently I approach it now with a lot more years of dual-analog controls under the belt. I've only beaten Halo and Halo 2. Both were beaten co-op with a roommate I had at the time. I'd give H1 a 6/10, and H2 a 7/10. Really overrated games IMO, but I realize that's an unpopular opinion. All I can say is if you do play through the original Halo, good luck with the "library" level.
