Here at HRG we often play forgotten underdogs, little known gems of yesteryear, or even archaic scholarly endeavors that were scarcely endurable in their own time. But this month's Club Retro is not about time worn obscurities, nay quite the opposite. This month's Club Retro is about playing hugely popular, well received critical darlings, that somehow you escaped playing during their window of popularity. I'm talking about video games that received unanimous high scores, and sold bucket loads of copies. Think Zelda, Grand Theft Auto, Halo, Uncharted, God of War, Call of Duty, Final Fantasy, Mortal Kombat... that level of popularity. We're trying to play big name games which have somehow eluded your own personal playing of. Will these titans of yesteryear hold up a decade plus later? Were they ever even that good in the first place? Only you can decide! Care for a jelly baby? Edit: This link should be useful: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lists_of_best-selling_video_games_by_platform- Here's what I'll be playing first: That's right, I've never even so much as booted the disc before.

Oh, dang, you're going to be in for lots of revelations about the series. Should be interesting to hear your thoughts when you get started.
I'm not sure what I'm going to line up yet (Deus Ex would be a good one), but I'm also tempted to give the original Halo a go.

Oh, dang, you're going to be in for lots of revelations about the series. Should be interesting to hear your thoughts when you get started. The reason I've not played MGS4, is it seemed to follow more in line with the MGS2 school of writing/design, as opposed to the far superior MGS3. I was not a fan of MGS2 at all, so that association put me off. But I'm willing to give MGS4 a try these days. As someone who has personally beaten both of those games, I highly suggest Deus Ex over Halo. But either way, it's good to see you play a first person shooting game now and then. I say that, because FPS is not normally a genre you gravitate to, so it's always interesting to read your take on games in that format.

The biggest thing I've learned is that I love DOOM, Dark Forces, and Descent. Three "D"s there. Hmmm, that would seem to be another sign pointing to Deus Ex.

Oh. Oh dear.
Actually, the GBC game is pretty decent.
(Believe it or not, I've also seen some people defend Daikatana PC as well. It might be interesting to try to tackle some other time, just to see if its reputation is deserved or not.)

Believe it or not, I've also seen some people defend Daikatana PC as well. No doubt. With nearly eight billion people on planet earth, you'll always find somebody who's willing to defend any given thing. No matter how rationally self-evident the ineptitude of that thing actually is.

Out of curiosity, is that one you played through? Any thoughts on it?

Out of curiosity, is that one you played through? Any thoughts on it? I played it for about thirty minutes many many years ago. My thoughts were that it was an active disease upon my hard drive that I could not uninstall fast enough. Nothing against John Romero, I think he's a decent dude overall. But his glory queen FPS utterly failed to make me his bitch.

I'm ahead of the game. I'm a few hours in Chrono Trigger. I never beat it before, so I guess now's the time.
